Kansas gives new momentum to abortion rights
Kansas – a deeply conservative and usually reliably Republican state, became the first in the nation on Tuesday to make a decision on abortion rights since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June. The result: They rejected a proposed amendment that would have paved the way for the Republican-led state legislature to ban the procedure.
The failure of the ballot referendum came as something of a surprise. Recent polling from the Kansas City-based firm Co/efficient showed that 47 percent of Kansans planned to vote in favor of the proposed amendment, compared to 43 percent who said they would vote no.
Kansas isn’t the only state where abortion rights are on the ballot this year. But the sound rejection of the so-called “Value Them Both” amendment — and the stunningly high turnout for a midterm election primary — was a significant victory for abortion rights advocates and an early sign of the political backlash against the Supreme Court’s decision to do away with the precedent set by Roe v. Wade.
You really summed it up very well in your last statement, IslandBites. Apparently there were people who were not polled, or people in the poll who didn't want any danger of being identified, so they didn't answer truthfully.
Regardless of one's position on abortion, people are beginning to realize the repercussions of living under a theocratic oligarchy. I can't call them a "theocracy" because there were some justices against the decision. Even some antiabortionists are wondering which other rights may be taken away by these power hungry zealots on the supreme court. The recent decision is a violation of the First Amendment right to privacy and to religious freedom. Antiabortionists can no longer argue that the decision was not a "religious" decision. A recent court case filed in Florida by a Jewish synagogue claims that banning abortion is a violation of Jews' First Amendment right to practice their religion. It is a tenet of their religion that the rights of the mother ALWAYS prevail over the rights of the unborn.

I hope that one of two things happen in this country: the Biden Administration is able to pack the Supreme Court with a number that won't allow future court to be packed by a despot like our former president was OR the Constitution is amended to elect the justices and subject them to term limits. Otherwise, we are no longer the "land of the free" and have become the home of the cowards.
Hurrah for the brave people of Kansas!!!
They represent the majority of Americans who want abortion to be as safe and available as any other health care in this country. People are entitled to their personal beliefs. They are not entitled to turn them into laws by whatever means they feel the ends justify. That is what I'm having the most trouble with. Christians who are praising God for answering their prayers, but are conveniently forgetting the unethical behavior that put these justices on the court. I don't find "The ends justify the means" anywhere in the Bible.

Republicans always want to take a mile when they are given an inch. Conservatives cheer with the overturn of Roe vs Wade, saying it was a victory for States Rights. So the Red States double down creating a Handsmaiden's Tale environment for its residents. But that has not been enough. Trump remains...

I am not able to understand this concept of 'Abortion rights'. The right to kill? The right of parents to kill their children, because they created them? and why is it that if I kill the child when she is in the womb not a crime, but when I kill her when she is outside a crime?why is it that only...

As a Democratic presidential candidate in 2020, Biden pledged to repeal the Hyde Amendment, which has banned federal funding for abortions since 1977. It appears that Joe Biden, who voted for that amendment back in 1977, can’t make up his mind on whether or not that’s a good thing. NBC News...
