Unemployment in India has been on the rise in recent years, with the unemployment rate reaching a 45-year high of 6.1% in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the situation, with millions losing their jobs as a result of lockdowns and economic downturns. The government and private sector have taken steps to address the issue, such as launching job-creation schemes and providing financial assistance to those affected.

We have quite the reverse in the UK, specifically - a chronic labour shortage:-

In the UK the current unemployment rate is only 3.7% (1.25 million unemployed), which is almost back to the record low of 3.4% in 1973 – and job vacancies are at a record high.

So currently in the UK, we have:

    •    1.25 million unemployed, and
    •    1.23 million unfilled job vacancies.

The US has a similar problem.  Which leaves me quite confused - while I recognize that some job openings are new and just haven't been filled yet, how can we have so many people looking for work with just as many openings?  Is it because Government will support them off the taxpayer dime so there is no need to take a job they don't like (or any job, for that matter)?

There is a perfectly simple reason:  Trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

Yes there are almost as many job vacancies in the UK than there are unemployed people; but apart from casual farm labourers in the summer months to pick soft fruits, a lot of the job vacancies are skilled work that takes time and money to qualify for, and work that just doesn’t suit everyone.

About 20% of the job vacancies in the UK (208,000 job vacancies) are in the human health and social work activities, including 133,400 job vacancies in the NHS (National Health Service), 9.7% of the 1.4 million employed in the NHS; of which 47,500 of NHS vacancies are for nurses, and 3,907 for pharmacy jobs in the NHS.

There are also 52,000 vacancies for posts in transport and storage in the UK, which includes rail and sea transport, taxi drivers, bus drivers and lorry drivers (HGV), 10% of which are HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) drivers.

Other skilled areas in the UK with chronic job shortages include, Engineers, Secondary education teachers, and Graphic designers.

        UNSKILLED JOBS
Yeah, sure, most anyone can do unskilled jobs such as picking fruit in the fields in the summer months (where there is currently a chronic labour shortage); but not many Brits want to be picking fruit in the open air in the British weather – apart from which, it’s only seasonal work anyway.

        SKILLED WORK
A high percentage of shortages in the labour market in the UK are in skilled work that requires qualifications and training, including Nurses, Pharmacists, teachers and engineers etc., all of which requires years of study at university and training, or HGV drivers and Bus Drivers which requires the expense and time, and training to pass the HGV (Heavy Good Vehicle) driving test or PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) & CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) driving tests to become a bus or coach driver.

To become a nurse in the UK requires a minimum of three years at university, working closely with the NHS (student nurses and doctors), which is why NHS hospitals are twinned with their local universities.

Not everyone is suited to be a nurse or pharmacist, teacher or engineer; and not everybody is suited to be a bus or lorry driver.

As I said at the start, it’s like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.
