What is a Geek?

Geek Girls Rock. Being geeky is not just for the boys, but us Girls too, but being a Geek can be alienating, especially for Girls, Why should it be a lonely journey? join in the fun debate online. Are people threatened by your vast knowledege or expertise on your subject, No, but people are threatened by the unknown. And they don't know a lot about Geek Girls, so we are seen as alien, to be made fun of. NOT

Find on this page, great ideas and presents for her, geeky presents, and geek glases plus more.

Geeks are smart, and have specialized knowledge on a specific topic, today you normally think of a computer Geek.

What kinds of Geeks

are there...

There are Star Wars geeks, drama geeks, science and technology geeks "Glee Geeks" even gardening geeks. Since the explosion of the .com geeks have earned a respect becoming somewhat cool, and hold a huge respect in the online gaming community.

The actual word Geek was borrowed from the circus, it was a term used to describe a freak show who liked to bite heads off of small animals, eat bugs and such. Yuk...

and funnily enough G.E.E.K which stands for General Electrical Engineering Knowledge originated from the Us Military, so may have influenced how we see and classify geeks of today.

Reasons we love Girl Geeks

And should encourage them

Geeks at school were the ones hanging around the science or maths class talking about the latest, physics, or Algebra test, and would take part in the chess club. And usually prefer to study more than worry about their social life.

They know their chosen subject, and when most of us have grown up and take on grown up issues, they still are consumed by their childlike affair, with subjects such as anime (Japanese animation), film or computers.

Computer geeks become some of the richest people in the world. Look at Bill Gates, someone whose obsession and curiosity revolusionised the computing world. Geeks share a sense of wonder that opens the mind to new ideas. however this would not have been possible, If it was not for one of our female ancestors curiosity for the how, the when, the why and the where, Bill Gates could not even have accomplished his ideas or vision. Yes it was a woman called Ada Lovelace, (1815-1852) who was an analyst of Charles Babbage's analytical engine, and she is described as the "first computer programmer."

What about Lisa Simpson (okay maybe a cheat here as she is a cartoon) but she is probably one of the most famous Girl Geeks. So Geeks are not to be scoffed or laughed at.

Famous Girl Geeks'

Past to Present

Lady Gaga attended a summer camp for a chance to stretch her intellect and creativity in a way that would not be developed in the conventional classroom, she said it was a place where she had a chance to find a different kind of social acceptance.

She is known for her songwriting and creative fashion statement pieces, which just goes to prove, not all girls' are your typical chess or computer playing Geeks.

Marie Curie, got the title "killing yourself in the name of Science", She was a physicist and chemist, awarded 2 nobel prizes, one for physics, and one for chemistry, she was a pioneer into the research of radioactivity. The level of radioactivity in her body killed her, She would carry testubes of radioactive isotopes in her pocket, all of her papers are deemed too dangerous to handle because of the dangerous radioaction levels.

Whereas Lady Gaga has achieved cult status, with her music. Marie Curie had to fight for recognition within the science field, she was seen as too forward thinking, independant but it was her groundbreaking discoveries, on radiation, that allowed work to be developed in Cancer Treatment.

I love being a Geek

Here come the Girls

Throughout school and most of my career, nothing has got me so excited...I was brought up to believe a womans place was in the home, cooking cleaning, whilst my brothers were out fixing motorbikes or cars, they were bought computers, I was bought barbie.

My husband loves his geek, and listens to me rabble on about how I dismantled a computer, re-building, I now have friends who ask me to look at their computers. I love seeing how dots, dashes, letters combined can produce a webpage.

Would I swap my highheels and lipgloss, for tied back hair and blackrimmed glassess. No.

It has taken me a few years to embrace my "Geekiness," and tell my friends, "yeah I love computers, so what!"

My wish is that all girls are encouraged, their passions allowed to develop, and not need to steer away from what they want to do just because its not seen as cool.

Encouraging girls of a highschool age to study scientific subjects, help to develop analytical minds, instead of satisfying their curiosity with "just because".

I was encouraged to sew, and I have enjoyed over the years, making my own clothes, this has helped my mind be able to problem solve from a very young age, however being blonde, blue eyed, I was already stereotyped. And found myself falling right into what was expected.

Over the years our world has grown, the poor socio-economic barriers that were once in place restricing womans entry into the workplace, have been lowered, the access and encouragement into Higher Education is promoted world wide and will lead to better-compensated, longer-term careers for woman.

When I was younger I wanted to be a "hairdresser", my Daughter wants to be a Marine Biologist, and I will encourage and support her on her chosen Path.
