A Woman of Capacity

Updated on December 3, 2013

A Woman Of Capacity

By Annette Gagliardi

She is a woman of Capacity
There is much she wants to know.
Her abilities are endless
Her flair for competence is sufficient to arouse suspicion.
Give her the full measure of life for she is up to the test.
Her boundless intelligence is as keen as a rapier
and bright enough to light the stars of heaven.

She is a woman of capacity
There is much she wishes to do
She is a Jill of all trades
Her caliber has no match as efficient or vigorous.
Give her the hard jobs no one wants for her tools are of great might.
Her prowess endowed early and often enables her to work
at all hours of the day and night.

She is a woman of capacity
There are places she yearns to go
She is a truth seeker
Her journeys explore the realities and profundities of existence.
Give her the theories you find most sincere
For she will hold them up against the harsh light of reality
and suffer the consequences.

She is a woman of capacity
Her hunger fills her up----to overflowing
She swells with its weight
There are volumes to exhume; to revel and delight in.
Give her the entire degree of hardships and hindrances to champion.
Its amplitude stretches her senses
They broadcast the world and serve to assuage her beast of craving.

author comments

I wrote this poem for the women in my life who serve as role models. They are fearless, hard-working, wonderful and wonderous, intelligent, courageous and 'all that'. I dedicate this poem to my grand mothers who lived in a time when women had to be more and do more without recognition. My grandmother once told me that she had done "so much for so many, for so long that  she was now qualified to do anything with nothing at all."  then she laughed the tinkle of delight that was her laugh.

You can never guess what a woman of capacity might look like.

Your grandmother set the bar high, and walked the talk! Amazing woman. How fortunate that you had such a strong role model, and what a lovely and fitting poem you've created to honor her and give the rest of us inspiration to live by.

Wow! This is a winner of a poem! I love the message and the structure with the repeating first line and new direction of capacity. She reminds me of the character I created for my fable about the environment and what women can do, Swamp Walking Woman. I should write a hub about her.

Wonderful piece! The first line is really something to ponder - for a lot of people who don't stop to ponder about the capable women in their lives and appreciate them. You might want to submit this to a woman's magazine - maybe even elaborate on it, transforming into a short story for publication - or maybe to a Christian greeting card company as a poem. There is another hubber who writes for a greeting card company. Beautiful poem; keep writing - you are on a roll!
