A tribute to my best friend "Sammy"

Updated on June 4, 2015

Sammy

One more attempt at poetry...

Sammy, what can I say, he was the most loyal friend I ever knew.

He never failed to be there when I was down and blue.

He always seemed to know what was on my mind.

You see, Sammy was a very special friend; he was a one of a kind.

Sammy was always there for me, despite the time, be it night or day.

If I needed him he was always on his way.

He had a way of making everything better and bright.

He could always make something that was wrong and somehow make it alright.

There were many days when my words to him were few and short.

When I was gone away, he would be there to protect my fort.

He adored my kids, and they loved him too.

They always counted on him, he always seemed to know what to do.

I remember one time, when I was threatened with physical harm.

Sammy stepped in, ready to protect me, with a vicious but cool charm.

He was one that truly loved my wife, with all his heart, soul and mind.

I was okay with that, for a friend like that is very hard to find.

The day he left us, he was sick and very week.

I held him tightly and putting my head next to his cheek.

You see Sammy was loyal to me right to the very end.

That is why he is known as man’s best friend.

This is bringing tears to my eyes when I think of my Friskie. It's very difficult to lose a beloved pet and my condolences go out to you CMerritt and everyone else who has lost a dear pet. That Sammy sure was a cutie-pie - Sammy and my Friskie would have produced some cute puppies.

      Hi Lynne,

A family dog is the best! I think if your husband would just give it a shot, he would NEVER regret it.

Thank you for your very, very kind words.

That's quite a tribute, Chris. Funny, I don't know, nor have I ever known, one person who didn't own at least one dog. Yet, I have never in my adult life owned a dog! And I love dogs, at least other people's. My husband isn't a dog person, so I suppose it's better to keep the peace. Anyway, I'm sure Sammy had a good life with you.

I was heading to bed when I found myself drawn to the computer chair and thought I may as well have a quick bumble around HubPages. I'm glad I did, I'll be honest I'm not really into poems although my daughter likes to follow me round reading poems she finds online.

Your poem has brought a lump in my throat. It is written from the heart and it shows and having dogs as pets ourselves I could easily relate to it.

I'll be showing this to my daughter tomorrow, I'm sure she will appreciate it too.

An excellent hub and a good one to head to bed on!!

This is a beautiful heartfelt poem! We had a dog who was just like your Sammy. Murphy was the best dog we ever had. My daughter, Allie, was at a park once walking and met a lady who was walking her dog. She said he looked just like Murphy! She couldn't believe her eyes. She said she knelt down, petting him, in tears because she missed Murphy so much. I know how you feel, I cried too when I took him to vets to have him put to sleep. So sad! Thanks for sharing this great piece with us.

...another lovely piece of writing and one in which I can relate to because I love my two cats so very much and they are my best friends.

You really don't have to say this is another 'attempt' at poetry - because as I always say if you write from the heart the mind will always follow - and to me, in this day and age, there is no such genre as traditonal poetry (which I find boring anyway - lol) so just go ahead and write how you feel and what you feel and it will come out alright - especially a subject that you feel close to.

I will come back later and have a read of your western short story - you are in fine company here as Will Starr and Wayne Brown both excel in this genre - that makes you the Three Amigos ......

Funny what we can learn from a dog. What it means to be loyal and faithful. Not demanding anything, grateful for everything. even tempered, quick to forgive. Not holding grudges. And we consider ourselves to be of higher intelligence? You are blessed to have had such a friend.

Chris, I feel your pain but as you remember the fun and loyalty that they so freely give, I've had many, like 15 and today I have 5 the others were adopted after I picked them off the dirt roads and gave them a bath a fed them back fat and shiny, but the 5 will remain until they or I leave this world and I hope it's them because I can help myself, and they wouldn't, save the 3 Rottys, know how.
