Online Dating Tips for Women - Selecting Your Portrait

Updated on December 31, 2007
Say cheese!
Say cheese!

So, where were we? Ah, yes. We’ve registered with our favorite dating service, chosen the perfect username, and are now ready to start creating our profile. First step, selecting our photos. Notice I used the plural form there. That’s because it’s in your best interest to upload at least three. Not a fan of having your pic taken? You're not alone! Isabella hates having her photo taken. In fact, the only thing I hate more than having them taken, is having to look at them once they’re developed. Or whatever you call it, now that everything’s gone digital. But I do understand the importance of having multiple pics in your profile, and by the end of this article, you will as well.

Right, photo number one - your portrait.

This is going to be your main pic, the one Mr. Right’s going to see as he’s scrolling down the screen. The one that’s going to catch his eye and make him want to see what else you’ve got cooking in that profile of yours. Which means this is the most important photo of the lot – cos, if he doesn’t like this one, he’ll never even see the others.

Basically, we’re talking about a good head shot here.

Don’t worry, you don’t need anything glamorous. Realistically, since it’s going to be cropped anyway, you could use a pic from almost anything. It needn’t be something you schlepped off to Olan Mills for. What matters most is that you look happy. Notice I didn’t just say smiling. That’s cos loads of people are uncomfortable with photos being taken, and a forced smile shows.

What’s that? You have a sexy, sultry pic you want to use instead? Hey, I’m not going to arm wrestle you over it. If that’s what you want to do, I can’t stop you. But I want you to take something into consideration before you do: if you look too sexy, Mr. Right might think he doesn’t have a chance and could pass right over you. No, I’m not kidding. If you have something along those lines, I’d advise using it as an additional pic and not your portrait. Just think how much of a bonus it will be, when he discovers the girl of his dreams also doubles as a sexy vamp?

By the way, if you’re willing to enlist the help of a male friend, I strongly encourage you to let him choose a few pics that he thinks make you look attractive, happy and sexy. Why? Because, ladies, we tend to suck at judging ourselves. Mind you, I’m not saying let him choose them for you. I’m just suggesting you let him give you his opinion and then you can muse it over. Ultimately, it’s your decision and you should be comfortable with whatever you upload.

Once you’ve selected your portrait, we’ll move on to the other pics you’ll be needing. Even if you fully intend to forgo that step, I recommend reading my next article. You just might change your mind by the time you’re done reading it!

xx Isabella
