Romantic Getaways for Lovers 2012

Ahh . . . love is in the air and as the day of cards and chocolates, draws near you may want to consider a special romantic getaway or vacation for you and your sweetheart. Here are some vacation sites, handpicked to rate high on the romance meter. And, whether you choose to spend the day taking in heart-thumping scenery, exploring warm sea or chilly lake waters, or donning your hiking gear for some breath-stealing travels, you will find an ideal vacation location here. If you can make it for Valentine's Day, you can still consider any of these romantic getaways for a later escape as their romance potential is year round.

Beach in Kauai
Beach in Kauai

Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai, known as the garden isle, is known for its postcard perfect landscape with lush gardens, beaches and waterfalls. The television series Lost and film Jurassic Parkare just a couple of many projects which have used scene stealing Kauaian views. Kauai operates at a slower pace than sister Islands, Maui and Oahu. There's only one main highway and part of the island is so remote you can only access it by boat or hike in.

There are several exceptional resorts in Kauai including the Marriott and Hyatt properties. The Koa Kea Hotel, 808-828-8888, is close to the beach and has private lanai. Several condo properties have timeshare condo units you can lease.

When you are not enjoying a romantic picnic on the beach, check out the Hawaii Movie Tours, Koke'e State Park or a sunset cruise.

Kauai stays seasonably warm throughout the year with temperatures averaging from the high 80s at night to low 60s at night. February temps range from 75 to 65 with 3" of rain.

Charleston, South Carolina

Even though you and your partner are lovers . . . not fighters, you can consider the historic city of Charleston as a romantic respite. Charleston is a scenic city, perched off the Atlantic Ocean and home to Fort Sumter (where the first shot of the Civil War is said to have originated in 1861).

Consider a stay in a bed and breakfast or splurge at the Wentworth Mansion or French Quarter Inn while visiting this city of impressive homes with manicured lawns on historic streets framed by Spanish moss. Take a leisurely ride in a horse-drawn carriage. You can explore the USS Yorktown, Morris Island Lighthouse and visit the Charleston Tea Plantation while in town. Or you can relax at one of the many outlying and barrier islands. Consider the five diamond Circa 1886 for a romantic dining experience or the Sugar Bake Shop for a taste of the decadent.

If you stay downtown, you can nix the car; otherwise, you may want to rent one.

Turks & Caicos

The delightful Turks and Caicos islands are situated in the Atlantic Ocean, east of the Bahamas. Like its Caribbean neighbors, the six inhabited Turks and Caicos Islands offer year round warm temperatures. Expect white beaches, turquoise waters and delicious sea delicacies.

If you two enjoy exploring the ocean, you may have found your match on these islands which have one of the longest coral reefs worldwide. Diving opportunities abound with SNUBA and Flamingo Divers, and Blue Water Diving just three of the popular outfits. Or you can set out to sea with The Beluga or take a Caicos Dream Tour.

The 22 room Le Vele provides intimacy and ocean views. Point Grace Resortis a smaller resort where you shouldn't[t have fight crowds for a spot on the sunset viewing spot on the beach.

Miami Beach, Florida

Do you like hanging out with the in crowd? Do enjoy people watching or gawking? Then take your sweetheart and join LeBron and his talents in South Beach in gloriously sunny Miami. Miami has a distinctive Latin vibe with many residents of Central and South America and the Caribbean in resident. If you and your special someone enjoying clubbing, you can drop in Tobacco Road and other pulsating clubs during your visit.

Visit the Ancient Spanish Monastery, catch the groovy action of the Art Deco landscape, take a cruise with Island Queen Cruises or marvel at the wonders at the Miami Museum of Science. Note, if you stay in the South Beach area, you will not need a car to get to the beach, restaurants and nightlight. However, if you plan to venture off the beach and explore more of Miami, you will probably need a car.

Wishing for a good meal? Visit the WISH restaurant,Spiga or Red The Steakhouse for good food and romantic ambiance.

Lake Tahoe, California

If your idea of romance involves mountains, snow and a cozy fire, consider a romantic jaunt to Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is about four hours from San Francisco. The north shore, with it's quieter pace, offers small town flavor and comfy accommodations. If you want to liven up your getaway, you can travel to the south shore, where the population and commercialization increases. If you enjoy casinos, you will find them here or you can take the 1-1/2 drive to Reno for Vegas style action.

Winter activities include downhill and cross country skiing. In the Summer, you can sail, jet or water ski, kayak or take a paddle boat. And, if you enjoy hiking there are a number of mountain alpine walks. You can also take a cruise. David Walley's Resort offers six hot mineral spring pools and other amenities.

Arequipa, Peru (South America)

If you and your loved one enjoy hiking and exploring, consider a vacation in perpetually sunny (300 days a year) Arequipa. Arequipa lies at that foot of El Misti, in the Valley of Volcanoes. The white volcanic rock outfits many of the Spanish buildings with temples, mansions, museums and even a convent or two open to visits. Arequipa a is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to this architecture which includes Aymara, Inca Indian and European influences.

The countryside is perfect for a wine and cheese picnic or camping adventure with lush valleys and thermal springs. And, if you enjoy a challenge, you can attack a four-hour excursion to Colca Canyon (twice the size of the US Grand Canyon). If you have a hankering for pathology and or not repealed by the slightly morbid, the Juanita Mummy exhibition displays the frozen remains of human sacrifices found in one of the 80 volcanoes surrounding this region.

Galena, Illinois

If you are seeking Midwest charm for romance and adventure, consider Galena. This small town near the northwest border of Illinois is three hours from Chicago. Experience Galena's quaint 19th century charm as you tour beautiful historic homes. Or if you are a history buff, visit the historic home site of Civil War General, Ulysses S. Grant. There are several bed and breakfast inns here including the Goldmoor Inn which offers a Chocolate and Champagne Progressive Dinner on Saturday, February 12 for $69.00 per person -- 800-255-3925. Galena has award-winning wineries and offers wine tasting and classes for budding sommeliers.

If you want to venture to Chicago to take in dinner and a show, consider the downtown Volare restaurant for delicious Italian fare and impeccable service. If plan on an overnight stay consider the Palmer House, Hotel Monaco or Amalfi.

Syracuse, Italy

Many European cities invoke an air of romance and intrigue. But consider the city of Syracuse, located off the southeast coast of Sicily and home of the Arethusa Fountain, where the lovely nymph Arethusa, pursued by smitten river god Alpeus, was transformed into a freshwater spring by Artemis, goddess of love. Syracuse an 8th century World Heritage Site contains the Olympic Temple of Zeus as well as preserved Greek and Roman remains in an Archaeological Park.

There's plenty to do on this island city include visiting the Tyche and Neapolis quarters with museums and catacombs and exploring the medieval art collection in the Regional Art Museum. Top rated restaurants include le Vin d L'assassin Bistrot and Regina Lucia and Algila Ortigia Charme Hotel.

Ready to Court?

Visit the travel and tourism websites below before booking your getaway and check on any travel requirements you may need such as a passport. Also, check on annual weather conditions for your location and note that some spots such as Kauai receive more rainfall and that the amount varies whether you are on the north or south end. Always, pack appropriate clothing and gear. Then grab your better half, some suntan lotion, and your travel brochures and GO!

How good to include Arequipa in the most beautiful destinations to visit during the Valentine's Day. In fact, I had the fortune to know this city due to a business trip. I stayed at a five star hotel, the Hotel Libertador Arequipa that with first class facilities was able to attend every one of my needs, always with very warm personnel. Check out their website:

In Charleston, try to get over to Sullivan's Island and eat at Poe's. Then take a romantic stroll on the beach. Lose your shoes like we did. Great post.
