All clovers are said to protect humans and farm animals against the spells and wiles of witches, wizards, fairies, and demons, the rarer, four-leaved clover is believed to be more powerful in this matter, even allowing the bearer to see these creatures.
They are also used by girls to know their future husbands.  The girl wanting to know would place a four-leaved clover in her right shoe, the first man she met whilst walking would be her future husband.  I would guess that when they played this game, the girls would walk on very specific routes in places where they knew who they were likely to meet.

The irish believe that if you find a four leaf clover, it brings you luck.  Four leaf cloers are hard to find.  When you are out in your yard and the kids are bored, have them search for a four leaf clover.
