Because it is encouraged in a lot of ways, especially in the business world. Making a person feel like they deserve more is a good way to get them to spend money. It is also a form of denial. There are many reasons.

It is becoming almost institutional in todays world of "praise everything your child does".
"Oh; Billy that is a wonderful fire you set in the living room." Followed by a bumper sticker that says "My Child is an Arsonist at Johny be Good Elementary School".

That over inflated self esteem won't help them deal with real life.
