How to do Lucid Dreaming....

While browsing the answers section, as I often do, I found an unanswered question floating around, asking how to do lucid dreaming. Considering that I've spent a fair bit of time researching & learning how to do just such a thing, I thought - now there's something I know a thing or two about, that might be helpful to this person & others, seeking a little help in developing their own ability to dream lucidly.

...Into the Dreamscape...

So with that wonderful question asker in mind, in this hub we're going to cover the basics of how to start lucid dreaming. And as with my of my hubs, I want to preface the rest of this info with the caution that this tutorial is based on my own personal experiences, and not any scientific study or time tested rituals for doing so. Some of the info I did learn from others some years ago and I claim no credit to any of it in terms of being unique. Take what works for you from this hub, and use it to build upon the rest of your research and journey practicing lucid dreaming -- leaving behind whatever doesn't work for you.


...Dream Walking...

The first definition is more commonly known, and often is the goal of most beginning practitioners. It's a perfectly great goal too, if that's what you're after. Though in my experience, once you've begun to get fairly good at awakening in your dreams, you're astral self will naturally start to become attuned to the vibrations of other realities that can only be entered into by beings in their ethereal form, which is only achieved through one of many types of astral projection or lucid dreaming.

Once that happens, you'll likely find yourself thrown into one or two occasions, which are hard to explain but which you will recognize when it happens, wherein you'll know that you are not dreaming and that the world you're in is not just a dream realm that you're subconscious mind decided to think up for you. You'll go through all sorts of layers of yourself, trying to decide whether or not you think your crazy, or if other people might think you're crazy for knowing deep in your bones that the worlds are real and not dreams in any way, and then if you persist in exploring them and gain some comfort and control in that adventure, you'll likely find yourself much more interested in returning to those infinite places rather than just waking up in your ordinary dreams.

In any case, whether you're here to get started with the basics of waking up and remaining conscious within your dreams, or if you're looking to hone your ability to enter alternative ethereal realities -- you'll hopefully find this article useful and fun.

...Through the Veil...

Learning to practice lucid dreaming is an artform of it's own kind. It's the ability to pass between the veils between psyches and worlds -- and back, and then remembering the experience.

Remembering - in particular, is the more challenging part of it all, as we all dream every night and more often than you'd think, we also travel into the dreamtime reality, and many other alternate realities. The problem is, most of us don't remember doing any of that. Even people who confidently assure you that they never or hardly ever dream, still dream and/or travel astrally every single night. They just have no astral muscle memory for recalling those experiences.

And what I mean by explaining this, is to show that dreaming, including lucid dreaming and astral travel, is absolutely natural and doesn't require any special skill development in order to begin doing so, because you're already doing them. So at this moment, put out of your mind any thoughts or notions or anxieties about not being able to lucid dream or start dreaming or anything like that. You were already a master at that part since before you were even born.

The part that you're missing, is the ability to recall your dreamtime travels and then to be able to consciously preset yourself in this realm, to doing so in dream realms, whenever you choose to, rather than just at random depending on when your subconscious and or karmic-consciousness determine you need to.

And a lot of the ability to wake up on the other side of the veil, is mostly just about being patient enough to continuing practicing this artform, until you just 'get it', while trying to remove your attachment to that knowing being instantaneous, so that you can get out of your own way and let it happen organically.

I'm aware that explaining the ability to lucid dream in this way, will be somewhat frustrating for some. Though it is the most succinct way that I can think to prepare you for the process of beginning and furthering your skills, and is something that I wish a lot of articles would have at least tried to describe when I was first beginning to try and perform lucid dreaming. Especially since, there is pretty much no amount of conscious knowledge or intellectual ability to understand the process, that can truly describe how you will really know when you are lucid dreaming, and what the difference is between that and how you feel before you just "get it". Once you're there and you "get it", you'll know exactly what I mean. Until then, just have faith that it's very rare for anyone who sets their mind to it, to not "get it" fairly quickly on. It's just not something we have enough adequate words to describe in the english language. At least not without further complicating the explanation.

Now, in order to help you get to this place where you're able to recall and request access to the dreaming-time, you're going to need to start working on building the muscles in your Dream-Body. Without doing that, even once you "get it" and are able to recall and request dreams, you'll still be left mostly at the mercy of whatever is happening around you, and what use is it to be able to be lucid of your dream if you aren't able to freely explore and enjoy all that there is in each dream?

...Dream-Body Building...

The best way I can think to describe your "Dream-Body", is that it's just like your physical body, with the exceptional difference that it is made up on exceptionally less dense energy than your physical body, and vibrates on the same level as most quantum or eatheric energy. For many folks, your dream-body is also known as your Astral Body. What you call it really makes no difference. I've just come to find that whenever explaining the art of dream traveling, lucid dreaming or other forms of journeying, it helps to refer to this part of your self as the dream-body.

Thankfully, most of your dream-body works in pretty much the same way as your physical body. In order to move your arm, you just have to think about moving your arm. In order to think about going some where, you just have to will yourself to get up and go where you want to go. In order to have the energy to do any of those things, you have to care for your body in healthy ways and be in a balanced place psychologically, and so on.

So learning to use your dream-body is not really complicated. The challenge is that most people are not used to traveling in their dream-body on a conscious level, and because we're so used to doing most things in a physical body made up of much more dense energy, it feels almost foreign to try and operate an energetic body.

Thankfully, gaining control over your dream-body, takes only the same process it does to gain control over your physical body. Just think about what an infant or toddler has to do to learn to roll over, then crawl, then walk, then ride a bike. Or what an adult would need to do in order to regain control over their body after an accident that left them bedridden or unable to use most of their body for a long time. You just need to concentrate, patiently persist, and be as kind to yourself as possible while you're building those muscles.

Below this module, I've added 5 methods for building your dream-bod, which have worked well for me, and which I hope will work fantastically for you as well.

1. Shamanic Journeying

There are many other names for this sort of journeying, and while I would prefer to use a term that has been less abused by westernized white culture, one of the most common description for this practice is known as Shamanic Journeying, which is a very similar practice to astral projection.

And in my personal experience, journeying is one of the best ways to build your dream-body muscles, as the practice is almost the reverse process of learning to lucid dream. I like to think of it as similar to a baseball player learning to perform ballet as a way of building muscles they don't otherwise use, which make then ten times better at what they regularly do. In that same sort of way, shamanic journeying can help you master the art of lucid dreaming faster and more concretely.

In a weird sort of way, shamanic journeying is the ability to go to sleep while awake and consciously interact with what you experience before you in that state. Lucid dreaming is the same, but opposite -- you're teaching yourself wake up while still dreaming and consciously interact with what you experience around you in that state. By learning to perform one art, you build your skills in being able to perform the other art, which in it's own way is kind of like a two-fer deal!

2. Meditation, Guided and Freestyle

Meditation, whether guided or freestyle, is another great dream-body builder. It's another art form that helps you develop skills and understanding by using a different skill set to get there.

Meditation in particular, helps you to hone your ability to be comfortable in chaos and in times that would otherwise be frustrating for you, but aren't because you're no longer attached to instant-gratification.

Meditation also helps you learn to just allow your dreams to come to you, so that you don't have to go around trying to chase or generate dreams, which often has a way of complicating your lucid dreaming practice, rather than helping it to develop faster.

Guided Meditation in particular, is a fantastic way to learn to clear and ground yourself, go with the flow of things around you, see better with your energetic eyes (a.k.a. "Third Eye"), and to listen to the stimuli coming to you vibrationally.

3. Creative Visualization & Daydreaming

It might not seem so useful at first, especially because so much negative connotation is often attached to daydreaming, but such an ability is actually an asset both for practitioners of lucid dreaming and astral travel, as well as for anyone building their ability to manifest or use the laws of the universe, like the Law of Attraction or Laws of Resonance.

If you already have a natural knack for daydreaming, this practice will likely be especially enjoyable for you. Your only real challenge will just be in allowing yourself to continue daydreaming once you start (assuming it's not detrimental for you to stop at the time, like if you're driving).

Alternatively, if you're not much of a day dreamer, then it's really just a matter of allowing your own imagination to wander and expand, and then to become a part of the conscious creation of further daydreams.

4. Astral Projection

Astral Project, which is often also called "Out-of-Body Experiences" or "OBE's", are another great practice to build for getting better at lucid dreaming. In fact, it is pretty much the same thing as lucid dreaming, as you're using the exact same energetic body. The difference is in where and how you start out, and what your goal is. Astral projectionists tend to have the goal of traveling to other places in this waking realm, but using their energetic body (at least at first), while lucid dreamers usually hold onto the intention of more freely experiencing or controlling their travel and interactions within dream-realms.

Now, with all that being said, the only thing I'd like to caution, is that because astral travel uses the same muscles and processes to perform as lucid dreaming, it can sometimes be just as challenging to learn how to do until that moment when you just "get it", that you might not end up being able to do it until you also click in and are able to lucid dream. Not that this is a bad thing. Just that it can save you some future frustration if you choose to pursue astral projection practices and find it somewhat more challenging than you expected.

5. Physical Memorization

Another great skill, one that is often overlooked and taken for granted, is the ability to truly have your own body memorized.

For the most part, we already know our bodies pretty well. At least, well enough that you'll find hardly anyone who can't immediately list all their own physical flaws in any given moment. Though most of us probably couldn't tell you where each and every freckle is on our own bodies, nor could we draw our own hands on paper with our eyes closed and no peaking or prior studying on your own hands features -- and that's what you need to be able to do.

In particular, this skill helps you to build the muscles in your conscious mind, to be able to recall your dreams, lucid and otherwise, and also to be able to give yourself a way to truly recognize when you are awake within your dreamtime.

Thankfully, understanding how to do this is easy. The rest is just practice.

Begin by taking 5 minutes two or three times a day (or more if you want), and studying your own hands. Seriously, just sit down in a quite place where you're not worried about being stared at or thought of as a weirdo, and study your own hands. Learn where all your wrinkles and scars are, and observe how each one of your cuticles is slightly different than each other one, or how different your life lines are on each hand. Really get intimate with your own hands. It will be worth it.

Once you've done that for a few days, get out your favorite art medium and commit your hand to paper in a drawing. When you first do this, don't worry about doing it by memory. Stop and study your hands further as you recreate each feature on paper. Then after you've done that enough times that you feel confident you know your own hands pretty well, try to do it without looking at your hands, or even while wearing gloves so you can't see them until you're done.

Once you can do that, then the trick is to teach yourself to lift up your hands and look at them from within your dream. This can be especially valuable, because sometimes we can become a little bit awake in our dreams, but it's either only going to be brief, or we're not awake enough or strong enough to be able to lucidly operate in the dream, that we aren't able to move body parts, or if we are, they don't appear to use in a real way. Like for instance, should you will yourself to life your hand up and look at it in your dream, if it looks like a cats paw or potato, then you're probably not yet able to lucidly dream, or you're not yet strong enough to do much more in that particular dream; at which point you could keep practicing with your hands in the dream anyways, and build your muscles more, which is still very helpful.


...Grounded Liberation...

Lucid dreaming is more or less just about being "free" to consciously enjoy the dreamtime. In order to really ground your dream-body muscles (and your brain) so that you can be free to enjoy these dreamscapes, your best bet is to make a habit of keeping a dream diary. That cements your abilities by building your apptitude to recall most dreams, as well as your ability to recall when you were lucid in a dream, how you did it and how you can do it again or do it easier/faster next time...

This can create all sorts of challenges that you really don't need in your life, but which many of us just have to experience for ourselves before really understanding. Though hopefully, with this gentle reminder and cautionary warning, you'll be able to find your balance and avoid any astral addictions, which will put you ahead of many before and after you who might not have anyone around to warn them and keep them from going through what can be a very painful process for some folks.

And I do mean painful, especially for anyone who truly does become addicted to lucid dreaming, astral travel, shamanic journeying, or any other form of accessing other realms.

Just like with drugs, lucid dream can become addicting, because it has the ability to allow us to escape our waking lives and all of the things that come along with it. And while that might not always seem like a bad thing before it happens, most people find that what they thought they were getting or creating by escaping into other realms and avoiding their waking lives, actually turns out to be worse than if they had never consciously learned to enter other realms in the first place.
