What is your perception of God?
Jesus is the Word of God (The Bible)
If the Bible is the authoritative Word of God, what should we expect to find in it?
Should it give us all the information we might ever find useful? Should we disregard all other books and consider the Bible the only reliable source of knowledge on every subject?
Some have viewed the Bible in this light, thinking of it as the complete source of all important knowledge, an exhaustive textbook or encyclopedia. The Bible, however, makes no such claim. It is largely silent on thousands of topics but excel in the spiritual realm.
What kind of book is the Bible?
What kind of instruction from God does humanity need?
When God created mankind, He instilled in us a high degree of intelligence, curiosity and capacity for learning. He gave each of us a mind that can gather and store knowledge and pass it on to succeeding generations. Through time human beings have used this intelligence to observe, describe, discover and build. People have used their minds to record vast amounts of knowledge.
God did not need to give us a book that contained information we could learn on our own. Instead, God gave us a mind with which we could acquire and develop an abundance of useful knowledge. What we needed was a book containing information we could never discover alone, knowledge that must be divinely revealed.
That is the information God has provided. That is precisely what the Bible is. It is a book of spiritual truth. But it also contains information about the material world. God’s unfolding of spiritual truths to real, physical human beings took place in real, physical settings and among actual, historical events.
The Bible, then, provides us a great deal of physical, as well as spiritual, knowledge. It relates information on material matters such as the ordering of the physical world. It gives us information on the orderly functioning of society. It addresses basic principles of success in occupational and financial matters. It imparts guidelines of nutrition and health.
The Bible describes many types of personal relationships. It addresses principles of psychological and mental health. It provides rudimentary information that touches on the physical sciences. But it does not treat any of these areas exhaustively, because God has given us the ability to search out these matters ourselves.
He is God.
What is your perception of God?
So many lies have been told about God.
Most people don’t believe there is a God, others think that there is a God, but He is standing in heaven and looking at our every move to punish or struck us down when we don’t do His will.
Is God only a fairytale, or do people go to church because it is tradition or the right thing to do?
Do you have a personal relationship with God based on your faith in the Bible?
Most people don’t believe that God is a personal living God. Some see God as an entity or power somewhere up there beyond the stars. God is actually a God that is active in the smallest as well as in the greatest daily details of our lives, without people even realizing it!
He is the God of the insignificant things in our lives as well as the impossible things. This is where my life’s story begins.
I was still a very small child, maybe 3 or 4 years old, the year 1967. I was very sick with 3 childhood illnesses at the same time. I knew that I was busy dying and call my mummy to come and help me but she was busy in the house with her daily chores, not even realizing what was happening to me. I was very ill, burning up with fever and in a lot of pain; I turned towards the wall of my room to die (that is how I felt).
At exactly that time a man came into my room and touched me. I knew that this man was Jesus Christ, even though I was so small. I was healed on the spot. This was the first time Jesus came to me and I believe He saved me from death because He had a greater purpose for me. Maybe He saved my life just to right this hub, so you can understand who God is and also to be saved, as I was.
When I was growing up I was always different from the rest of the children, always alone. It was as if God protected me from the wickedness of this world, but like all humans, I also got into trouble, because that’s our human nature.
For many years I was caught up in tradition and robbed of a personal relationship with my Creator. I was robbed of peace and also of the freedom Jesus gives to all who seek Him! I was struggling through life, trying to do things my own way and failing terribly.
The memory of Jesus faded away with the years until I was confronted with the truth, when my brother suddenly got ill and died within two weeks.
I did not understand and did not believe most things about God or the Bible because it did not make sense to me. My parents lived a traditional Christian life, without the power of the Spirit evident in their lives. The teachers did not teach me or maybe they were not informed or worse, were also not saved.
I like to understand things before I believe.
I pray that if you are also struggling in this area, this hub will help you to explore the vastness of God and who He is. I pray also that you will understand the Bible better, through the help of the Holy Spirit. You need to pray that God will open His word to you; because the Bible can only be understood with the help of the Holy Spirit.
One day I asked or prayed that if Jesus is real, as I could remember him when I was little, that I could meet Him. I asked Jesus to come into my life. He is faithful and He did come into my life, as He will do for you if you ask Him to.
This hub will help you to see a living God who is proactive in my life through my testimonies, life- experiences and life- changing lessons that have all had a part in building my character and drawing me closer to God. God is more real than what you ever will know.
As I walked a road with Jesus two testimonies stood out in showing me who God really is. I always expected God to do the impossible, but God revealed Himself to me and my wife, Cavell, in so many new ways.
He is the God of the insignificant things in our lives as well as the impossible things. He has become an absolute part of our lives, without Him we could do nothing.
I want to start by showing you that our God is real and God of the small as well as mighty things. God is real in that when you ask Him for help, talk to Him or pray, He will answer you. God uses mighty miracles to show us that He is the God of the impossible: as in the next testimony of the rain in the desert.
Testimony of the rain in the desert:
We were touring through South Africa and the land was stricken under heavy drought, which had endured for almost two years. As we were driving through town after town, all the landscape and dams were the same. Almost everything was brown with a bit of greenery here and there.
A few rivers had a trickle of water running through the centre. The whole country was burdened under the drought. Most dam’s big and small were dried up and most rivers too. The son was scorching hot in a cloudless blue sky. The vegetation that was left was burnt grey-brown. We knew that all the churches were praying for rain for months. As we came through the “small-Karoo” as it is called, Cavell saw a man coming out of his mud hut with a bucket. We looked around to see where in this drought-stricken desert he gets his water. There was nothing, not even a borehole or wind pump.
My wife started to cry for this man. She asked God for rain so that that poor man could have water to live. She also asked God that the drought be broken and to heal the land. We agreed on that prayer in Jesus name and believed in God for a miracle. Shortly after the prayer, we saw a small cloud as small as a man’s hand forming in front of us over a mountain in the distance. We started to rejoice and we praised God for answering our prayer.
To our amazement the sky suddenly changed and became overcast. It started to rain. We rejoiced and praised God again for hearing the prayer.
Our faith grew in those moments. The raindrops were as big as a small bird’s egg and it rained so heavily that I had to reduce my speed to only a snail’s pace. It rained all the way back home to Johannesburg (five hours drive). As we watched the news that evening we saw that it had rained all over the county, even in the desert parts of our country, and the drought was broken.
So who are we that God listened to a mere human’s prayer as we called upon Him for help? I believe that God heard the prayer of His children all over the country to bring relief to the land. Yet God chose to let it rain at that precise moment in time, to increase our faith to trust in Him and to bring home to us the importance and power of prayer.
Why would God choose that moment in time?
1 John 5:14-15: And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask any thing according to his will, He hears us: And if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him. (KJV)
The Lord Jesus shared with us His compassion for the man and the country that we prayed for. We did not doubt for one moment that God is real and that He would give us whatever we asked in the name of Jesus, even water to a thirsty land.
God also hears when we pray for the little things.
The testomony about my Koi:
I had bought a small Koi (fish) and was looking for it in the dam. I thought that a bird has eaten it or that something happened to it. I did not want to lose this particular fish as it was a rare black Koi with beautiful gold markings over the back. I was sitting beside the dam for hours trying to see it but without success. My wife came out and asked me why I was spending so much time out there and I told her that I was looking for the small black Koi and shared my fears with her.
Cavell assured me that the Koi was still there hiding somewhere. She came out later with a cup of coffee and found me still upset about my Koi. She placed her hand on my forehead and prayed, asking God to give me peace and to show me my fish, so that I could know that God even looks after my small baby Koi. I thought that this was a strange thing to believe God for. As she said amen, the baby Koi swam out from under the rock it was hiding beneath and swam right up to me as if it was saying, “here I am”.
It was as if it looked at me, then disappeared beneath the rock again.
I sat there totally speechless. My faith grew enormously that morning. Right there and then I learned to trust God for the small and seemingly insignificant things in life as well as for the big miracles. I had not even thought of praying for these small everyday occurrences that seem trivial, yet they test our faith in God.
God will use something like this to show you that He really exists and to nurture your relationship with Him and your faith in Him.
Who is this Personal God I am talking of and why will He do miracles for some humans and others appear neglected.
