Online Bible Verses - John 3:16: The Bible's Most Well Known Verse
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
Many would agree, the most well-known verse in the Bible. The first time I became conscious of it was while watching a football game on TV, circa 1975. There was this guy in the crowd with a rainbow colored afro, who held a sign up which read “JOHN 3:16”. I asked my dad, what does that mean? Who is that guy?
“Some nut.”
Over time, I began to recognize him at tennis matches, football games and other major sports events. Some Bible guy, I concluded. Seemed happy enough, I liked the rainbow hair. A harmless nutcase like my dad said. Forgot about him.
35 years later, I understand what the guy was doing with his sign. He was sharing the Gospel with millions, including me. He was planting a seed which sat dormant for many years. Many more such nuts would cross my path over time:
- a kid from my hometown who survived cancer and became a Jesus freak thereafter.
- my roommate in college
- those nice people who came by my apartment with their Bibles when I was in the Navy.
The list goes on, hundreds of people could be included. All of them, I believe, put there to share with me something I needed.
People knocking on my door because they actually cared about me. They had the sense I was lost, and they were correct. So they came back next week to share good news. The good news contained in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The good news found in John 3:16.
