Online Bible Verses - Habakkuk 3:19 - The Sovereign Lord is my strength
“The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.
Habakkuk 3:19
Habakkuk was an Old Testament prophet. As is often the case, we see a lot of meaning packed into one line. We first see the LORD described as sovereign. What does that mean? Some definitions:
- having supreme rank, power, or authority.
- supreme; preeminent; indisputable.
- greatest in degree; utmost or extreme.
- being above all others in character, importance, excellence, etc.
Characteristics fitting to One whom can have no equal. Seems you can’t have two coexistent, infinite beings. Ultimately, then, there is one Guy in charge.
And, it appears He is willing to offer us help and support. “he enables me”. We all, I think, want to be strong. Sometimes I feel like I used to be strong, but am no longer. Go to bed feeling like it is all downhill from here, getting weaker. But then He gives me a turbo charge, and encourages me to keep pushing. I am usually tired on Friday. Went to bed last night, wondering how tough it would be this AM in dragging myself out of bed to go work out. I’m an alternative medicine type, have been frequenting health food stores for years researching things which God has placed in nature. Things which can help us be better, healthier. Natural ergogenic aids. Herbs, wheat grass juice, Kombucha, ginseng …… etc. Have tried them all, always experimenting; an ongoing, lifetime study. Anyway, tried a new concoction last night and it appears to have had a beneficial result. Slept more soundly than usual, and had vivid dreams. Waking up and recalling dreams has become less common at this age. But last night was different. In addition, arose with much more energy than usual for a Friday. The key element we would look to retain with age: ENERGY. We do not need more time, we need more energy.
And how is this relevant to scripture and/or God? Because, as Habakkuk states and I believe, it is God who guides me to what will “make my feet like a deer”. Sometimes when I go into the local health food store, I actually pray. It goes something like this, “Lord, show me what I need in here. Open my eyes.”
All that stuff on the shelves, some of it based on quackery. But some of huge benefit and value. Just like the world when we look out upon it. How can we know what choices to make? What will help and what will hurt?
This is when we can give the steering wheel to He who knows.
