TRUE GHOST STORIES - Our Ghostly Passenger

Updated on May 31, 2011

The Haunted Car

* As told by Jackie

The large second-hand car was just right for my family with plenty of room for my 3 kids and myself to get around in, and it was cheap enough that I was able to pay cash for it. The old car had been sitting in my neighbours back yard since I’d moved in five years ago, and now it would be back on the roads ferrying us around town.

But I soon realised as I drove our new car, that I had an extra passenger along with us for the ride. A shadowy, male figure would often appear in the passenger seat next to me. It scared me at first and I remember driving home from the shops and bolting from the car the moment I got in the driveway, but after a while I just became accustomed to the sensation of our extra passenger travelling around with us.

I wasn’t the only one who could see him though. “When you drove off yesterday afternoon there was a man sitting next to you!” my sister Theresa said on the phone. I just shrugged it off.

Another time my friend Nancy asked who the person was she had seen in the car next to me at the local shops. I laughed and said it was my ‘ghost passenger’, but she just looked at me like I was crazy.

One day I was entering a round-about and a large truck and trailer entered right next to me. I flinched when I saw the truck close in on the side of my car and panicked a bit as I had the kids in the back and we had nowhere to go to get away from the merging truck. Just as I thought the truck would either side-swipe the car or run us over, the shadowy figure appeared in the passenger seat and seemed to expand in size. I quickly looked from the road to my ‘ghostly passenger’, then back to the road and at the looming truck. All of a sudden the truck lurched sideways just at the last moment, and we were saved from danger. The entity beside me faded away.

Another day I was standing at a ‘Stop’ sign, waiting for the traffic to clear so I could pull out onto the highway. All of a sudden a man’s voice said loudly “DRIVE!” In my shock I planted my foot down on the accelerator and pulled out into a small gap in the traffic. Looking behind me, a large sedan had come careening down the road, and had I not moved, it would have ploughed right into the back of us.

“Thanks ‘friendly ghost’” I said out loud.

I kept that car for a further 5 years, and my ghostly passenger continued to travel along with us wherever we went.
