Overcoming Evil with Good
What do we really know about Good and Evil?
What do we really know about the dynamics of Good and Evil. We know there is a good and we know there is evil, but do we really and truly understand what good and evil are or more-so, how to overcome one or the other? According to Dictionary.com, the definition of good is Morally excellent, virtuous, righteous, and pious. And the definition of Bad, according to dictionary.com, is not good in any manner or degree. Now that we know the definition of Good, let's dig a little deeper into what the word means. Morally excellent. To have moral excellence is to have great personal morals and values, which we seem to be missing a lot of in the recent generations. What does it mean to be virtuous, you ask? It means having good virtues, values, and principles. Righteous, one of my favorite words, means to be right in a moral and ethical way. And lastly we will look at pious. Pious means to truly believe in your morals or to be devoutly religious. This is what the website states are the meanings of these words.
Genesis 3:22
Understanding Good and Evil
Most people can remember as far back as to the ages of 3-7 on average. If you ask me, I may have one or two memories from when I was 4, but I do believe I never really started remembering until the age of 6. Many might remember as a child, watching a cartoon or seeing a comic strip with the main character having a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other trying to sway them in both directions. This may have been a cartoon, but the battle of good and evil is very real and continues daily. I find this to be the hardest battle I have ever had to fight and it seems like it goes on forever. The bible acknowledges both good and evil, but how do we determine which is which? How do we know what is "Good" and what is "Bad"? Mark 7:20-23 says: What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a persons heart, that evil thoughts come - sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person." We are all born with something called intuition which us believers know to be the Holy Spirit. This means that we get a feeling no matter what the situation. It is our decisions that define what ultimately happens, but it all stems from intuition and the Holy Spirit. This is the wisdom that God gave us. Hebrews 4:12 says: For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. This means that when we hear that little voice saying, this is wrong, or this is right, it is the Holy Spirit that God gave us. Now, we often ignore these thoughts and still do our own thing, but intuition is our direct line of communication between our spirit and God.
His Word is Alive!
Our Own Worst Enemy
The battle of good and evil is within ourselves. When we have a feeling that something bad is going to happen and yet we ignore that feeling, more often then not, we find that we should have followed our intuition. We have the power of free will, but yet God still gives us intuition and discernment. This means that on top of giving you the right to make your own decisions, he has also given you the tools to know if that decision is right or wrong prior to our making them. We decide. We choose to either give in to these thoughts or to fight against them. Either way, there will be repercussions to our decisions.
