Why Do We Pinky-Swear When Making a Promise?

Updated on February 20, 2011

Pinky swear and pinky promise rules and origin...why do we join our pinkies together? Read on...

Lovers Pinkies…

Boy: I won’t sleep without saying good night and sweet dreams.

Girl: Pinky promise?

Boy: Pinky promise!

**Boy falls asleep again while talking to her girl on the phone. So another fight for the next day… LOL

Friends Pinkies…

A group of girls bind their pinkies to make a pact not to be involved with the same guys.

**That is so common to friends but it’s so common too that such promise ends up broken…sad to say.

Best Friends Pinkies…

A girl confesses to her best friend that she cheated on the exam because it’s the only chance she’s got to pass. To keep the secret, they join their little fingers to make a pinky promise.

Mom and Kid Pinkies…

Mom: Baby, I’ll buy your favorite ice cream later if you promise to sleep early tonight.

Boy: Really? Ok, mom, let’s make a pinky swear.

Pinky Swear or Pinky Promise

People, especially girls and the underage do Pinky Swear (Pinky Promise to some) when making a promise. They entwine their pinky fingers to bind a deal and a pact. It goes that the person who breaks the promise must cut off their pinky finger. Ouch!

In the modern world, some still do pinky swearing. Seriously or not, it signifies a binding agreement. The Pinky Swear can be broken if all parties agree. Pinky promises are also only valid if all parties agree prior to interlocking pinkies.

Promises come straight from the heart and are sworn to value. They, however, are not only kept, but also broken…which when broken, breaks the heart and trust.

So better not make a promise, better not swear if you’re not quite sure you can keep it.

Once and for all, Why Do We Join Our Pinkies?
