Blessed is the man

Psalms 1:1a

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, (KJV)

Blessed in the Scripture means to find favor with God. And to all Bible believing, God fearing Christians that should be a goal high on our priority chart. But this opening line in one of the most highly esteemed books of the Bible is often ignored. And to our detriment. Because to not have the favor of God brings discontentment and unhappiness which definitely effects our witness to the lost and our testimony among fellow believers.

It is my conviction that too many times we read over phrases such as this without giving full thought to its meaning. We shrug it off with a subscious thought that "I would never do that." But do we do it without realizing it? I think so.

As a child I grew up in a fundamentalist Christian home. We attended church regularly. I mean we didn't get up on Sunday morning and ask if we were going to Sunday School. We knew we were going. We went Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night and every night during the week if we were having a revival meeting. We never had a TV in our home when I was growing up. We were sheltered from ungodly counsel. My parents knew what we were doing and who we were with at all times. I didn't appreciate it at the time, neither did my siblings. Everyone of us (all seven) as soon as we left home the first thing we did was buy a TV. We resented being the only one in our school class (and at church) not having a TV. I remember the kids at school laughing at the Perry Como show. I didn't know what they were laughing at, I'd never heard of Perry Como. I remember preachers preaching against TV, telling of its horrors and it would damn us all to hell. (Most of them had TV's too though.) But everyone except my parents justified having a TV because they controlled what they watched. They watched only news and "acceptable programing."

Well here we are 40-50 years later. The preachers no longer preach against TV, my parents have gone on to their reward so everyone has a TV now. But we watch more than the news and "acceptable programing." Anything and everything is acceptable. (We self-rightously don't let the kids watch the "adult" programs.) But by doing so, are we "walking, or sitting, in the counsel of the ungodly?" We are when we let the world with its ungodly agenda fill our minds and ultimately our hearts with their garbage. They along with our educators have told us we have to be politically correct, accept the gay and lesbian agenda, that we evolved from apes and monkeys and that there are no moral absolutes. We have sit under their counsel and bought it lock stock and barrel to a large degree.

We not only have allowed it into our homes we have allowed it into our churches. Just within the past couple of weeks, two major denominations have compromised Scripture by allow unscriptural activity to be openly practiced. One person was quoted as saying "we are not to judge each other." It is not judging to condemn what Scripture condemns. The counsel of God says "Be ye holy for I am holy." 1 Peter 1:16. (KJV) The ungodly counsel says "if it seems right, do it."

So what is walking in the counsel of the ungodly?

It is any idea, thought or practice that is contrary to Scripture that we listen to. I used the TV as an example here, and I offer no apology, but it is far from the only ungodly counsel. I also briefly mentioned educators but a book could be written on the propagation of their ungodly counsel. I briefly mentioned some religious groups, God help us and forgive us. If you want the favor of God, heed His counsel. We have substituted God's favor for the favor of man and temporal pleasure.

I don't know if I should open this Hub up for comments or not, but I'm going to.
