Do Christians go through the Great Tribulation ?

Updated on June 5, 2013

What is the Great Tribulation ?

The Great Tribulation is recorded in the New Testament and it is translated from the Greek words "Thlipsis Megale" which means great trouble, distress, affliction or calamity. It is spoken by the Lord Jesus Christ during His Great Discourse on the End of the World.

Here is what He said;

"For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened." (Matthew 24:21-22)

Some Dispensationalist churches teach that Christians do not go through the Great Tribulation because they believe they would have been secretly raptured (snatched up) to heaven when the Great Tribulation occurs in the world, but the Lord Jesus Christ said the "elect" will still be in the world during that time. The Dispensationalists argue the "elect" refer only to the Jews and not Christians. This is not what the Bible says. In the New Testament the “elect” refers to Christians that are chosen by God for salvation (Lk. 18:7; Col. 3:12; Rev. 17:14). The Holy Bible is very clear that Christians will still be on earth during the Great Tribulation.

Please go to this web page: The Secret Rapture

What is the Nature of the Great Tribulation ?

  • Behold the day of the LORD comes, Cruel, with both wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate, And He will destroy its sinners from it.” (Isa. 13:9)

  • “I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will halt the arrogance of the proud, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.” (Isa. 13:11)

  • “That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of devastation and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness.” (Zeph. 1:15)

What kind of Great Tribulation do Christians go through ?

Here is what the Lord Jesus Christ said in Matthew 24:9-13

9. “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My names sake.

10. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another.

11. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.

12. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.

13. But he who endures to the end will be saved.

Persecution of Messianic Jews in Israel

Does the Lord Jesus Christ return Before or After the Great Tribulation ?

The Lord Jesus Christ said He will return “Immediately after the tribulation of those days" and not before.

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of then will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” (Mt. 24:29-30)

If the Lord Jesus Christ returns "immediately after" the Great Tribulation then Christians will still be here on earth during that time.

Why does God let Christians go through the Great Tribulation ?

  • To Sanctify the Church with the Truth The Lord Jesus Christ prayed to the Father: “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:15-17) “that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water with the word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish.” (Eph. 5:26-27)

  • To Strengthen the Faith of the Believersstrengthening the souls of the Disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, ‘We must through many tribulations enter the Kingdom of God.”(Acts 14:22)

  • To Test the Faith of the Believers “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, it need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Pet. 1:6-7)

Will Christians escape the Sufferings during the Great Tribulation ?

According to the New Testament God would take care of the Christians during the Great Tribulation, but they would still be in the world at that time.

  • “Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.” (Rev. 3:10)

  • “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man." (Lk. 21:34-36)

  • The Lord Jesus Christ said that Christians would escape the Great Tribulation only if they would watch (be alert) and pray always.

The Lord Jesus Christ gave instructions on the Time when the Disciples should Escape ?

  • Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.” (Mt. 24:15-16)

  • The “abomination of desolation” occurred when the sacrifice and offering is ended (Dan. 9:27).

  • The “little horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, . . . who exalted himself” is identified as the Antichrist in the End Time. He caused the daily sacrifices to be taken away (Dan. 8:9-12).

  • “Then the king shall do according to his own will: he shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished; for what has been determined shall be done.” (Dan. 11:36)

  • All the above scriptural verses point to the Antichrist who would be revealed during the Time of the Great Tribulation (2 Thes. 2:1-12).

What is the Meaning of Abomination of Desolation in the End Time ?

The biblical terminology "abomination of desolation" is recorded in Matthew 24:15 and Mark 13:14.

"Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place, (whoever reads, let him understand)." (Mt. 24:15-16)

These words are taken from the Lord Jesus Christ's Great Discourse on the End Time. Luke's record of the sermon explains what the abomination of desolation is about.

"But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near." (Luke 21:20)

must watch and hear video on youtube titled, "Christ testimony of the churches around the world." there are two identical Jesus Christ revelation 17:8. most of revelation is happening in the spirit world. that's why Jesus said it would be like the days of Noah and Lot. the abomination of desolation is happening in the spirit realm inside all these man made buildings set up for worship. the Christians and catholics, etc are not aware of what's happening to them and around them in these places, (churches -any four wall building representing God to gather believers of Christ). these churches around the world are all connected to "The Great City" Revelation 11, which is spiritually called Sodom and Egypt and Mystery of iniquity. this email is not a joke. Church leaders around the world are searching of the earthly signs. this will not happen until the very last day and hour. God will not allow man to destroy the earth with nuclear bombs. read matthew 3:12 and Revelation 20:9. God sends his son to the earth with the fire behind him consuming all his enemies which are left from the resurrection of the dead and those that are alive. the body of Christ is gathered as the son of man appears at last sound of shofar, he is coming while the wheat are gathered and the tares are left as the chaff and earth is consumed by the fire of God.

I really appreciate you and others who are attempting to awaken Christians to the truth that we will go through the time of great tribulation, and that his coming is 'immediately after the the tribulation of those days' (Mt 24.29; Mk 13.24). I believe the Holy Spirit is hard at work poignantly demonstrating we are in the last days prior to Christ's return, and that we need to get ready.

We are instructed to plan/prepare for future events, and this is no exception (Prov. 22:3, 27.12). I also like to refer to Prov 3:21 - 26 where our ultimate salvation is the Lord himself (NLT).

There is a great book which deals with this issue called, "DISCOVERY TO CATASTROPHE," a fictional journey of a community Bible study leader who discovers the truth about the rapture and the coming of Christ, and others who soon join in preparing for His return. It deals with 'prepping,' and 'survival' as a small group of Christians attempt to flesh out what it means to be prepared when they are no longer able to buy or sell.

Blessings on you as you get the news out to many who are beginning to awaken to the truth.

@Terry: I love that passage in Luke. If we would but remember those words in time of trouble, it would bolster our faith immeasurably. We serve a God who is able to deliver us. We don't understand how He does it, but He knows everything about us at every moment of the day, even the number of hairs on our heads. I've heard many say that the pre-trib/mid-trib/post-trib issue is not a salvation issue, but it is, because those who believe they'll be raptured before the Tribulation will doubt that "the mark" is really the mark (because "this can't be the mark of the beast because we're not raptured, yet". Many are being mislead, to their peril.

Thank you for this great post and for all the comments. Nice to know that many are not clueless.

Just remember that you are children of a King. He can and will protect you, and we may not know His method until the time comes. I think we all should practice being faithful about all the 'little' things in our lives, now, so that faith will be stronger when we need it most.

      Shalom/Peace to all, and Blessings,

I urge all believers to read The Return of the Antichrist and the New World Order by Patrick Heron. The Bible explains itself and Patrick shows how this happens vis a vis the beast that rises from the pit. Really. Read this.

I am so glad that people area starting to talk about this! I was brought up in a pre trib church like most of us, but it never made sense what they were teaching. I didn't understand the word until I was in it myself. I think if we stay in the word oand in prayer he will guide us to where we need to be! I just hope that more christians will learn this truth, and not rely on just what they are told in church. Do your best to present yourself to GOD as one aproved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly hadling the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

      Luke 12:24

Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor BARN; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?

      Luke 12:29

And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

Matthew 6:24 25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, [shall he] not much more [clothe] you, O ye of little faith?

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day [is] the evil thereof.

God will prove to all who do not believe, that He is alive and real. He's people will be cared for, this is our faith. Believing that God will care for his own. Never doubting, that He will provide. Think about storing up for yourself and your family. The followers of the world, who do not have faith in God, would only kill you for what you have saved. Faith, believing without a doubt always. Knowing God will care for us no matter what. This is promise. You must believe it. If you live in Christ and have faith, You need nothing else!

1Jo 3:22 - And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

1Jo 3:23 - And THIS is his COMMANDMENT, That we should BELIEVE on the name of his SON Jesus Christ, and LOVE one another, as he gave us commandment.

1Jo 3:24 - And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

The above verses reveal the commandments of the verse below

Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Keep vigilant for the devil roams about seeking whom he may devour. Trust in the Lord and he will guide you through. We must watch the times, and be prepared to follow the Lord where-ever he leads.

Especially when the abomination of desolation is set up, some will not notice it and be trapped before they can escape because they didn't watch.

You might prepare for the first 3 1/2 years, but the last three and half you will have to rely on Yah's "hidden manna" (Revelation. Also, study the feast of Israel they are practice for your escape to safety. I used to be as you also deceived over the rapture!

I've been thinking maybe i should build a shack in the woods, and set up an eco system for heating and lighting etc, as at some point in the tribulation we won't have the means to pay for such things. Then i thought, this isn't right surely; if we're going to stand and witness, we're going to have to be around people unsaved, not hiding away. i do realise that some communities would be necessary for the survival of projects and just to build each other up in the faith.

Until very recently, I was one of those who comfortably believed in the pre-tribulation- before I realised that that belief is only 150 yrs old; on the Scttish woman's vision(Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church had his vision around the same time!)

      Dear Ark Writer,

Should Christians take it for granted that they will go to a place of safety? Though a place of safety is offered to some, what abot all the others, Revelation 3:10 & Revelation 12:6,14- 17. Why are some not allowed to go to a special place during the Great Tribulation?

Is it okay to prepare for hard times before these things happen or are we to trust God completetly to provide for our needs. For example should we have enough food and water to carry us through hard times like the recession and coming depression that is about to come on all nations?

This is a message of love from God. We humans have had our time to bring peace on its own terms but they have let Satan the Devil sway them to continue to oppose God's plan of salvation. Time is about up! The rulers of the earth are preparing for one more onslaught to bring peace on their own terms, more war ande death for most. God has been warning mankind to listen to him. Many prophets and servants of God have continued to warn everyone to repent and believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Many have died through persecution because there are those that will not listen to what God has inspired through Jesus Christ all these centuries and years. Many more will also be tested to see what they really believe. It will not be pleasant but iit will be done, Revelation 3:10. Many false prophets and evil world leaders have their own false gospel for human survival. This is what we need to fear. To fear being caught up in the Devils plot to exterminate all life from the earth and receive their evil "Mark". Matthew 24:22 Revealation 17:12-14.

It is a time for Christians to wake up and get ready for Christ's return and to fear not being ready to do the job were are called to do, before the end does come. Matthew 24:4-14. Some are asleep on the job and some are complacent and think they are okay but do not know how blind and vulnerable they are because they do not have enough 'Oil' or Holy Spirit to see them through these hard times Matthew 25:1-13. Never the less Christ will give them a chance to bare fruit for him in the Great Tribulation, Revelation 3:14-22. God the Father in His love for us will sent His Son Jesus this second time to save all those ready for the First resurrection. Will we be ready?!

The conclusion to this whole matter is to Love God enough and fear not to break His commandments, Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, because God will bring every work into judgement, including every secret thing, whether good or evil. Do you love Jesus Christ? Then keep His Commandments, John 14:15.

With all of the things happening, it seems to be ushering in these times. I see many people on here claiming that this is a message of fear. Because I am saved, I don't see it as fearful. I see it as exciting because that means we are closer to being with Him. Those who say it is scary are the ones making the choice for it to be scary. God promises He will take care of us who are saved, and I put my total trust in that. I only wish more people would open their soul's eyes to Him. The devil is certainly doing a great job by decieving all of those people.

However, I will not give up on them. We are not so confident in our selfs to think that we could be chosen to go to a place of safety. This Gospel still need to be preached even though we have liitle strength compared to others who are bigger and stronger in numbers and finances to give a bigger witnessthen we are.

It will take everyone male and female to give this witness while we can. However, we are committed to do the best we can whether being persecuted like so many are already in many Christian ministries overseas like the Voice of The Martryers, Open Doors with Brother Andrew or Prayer for the Persecuted Church and so many more are doing.

There may be as 200,000 a year being killed for Christ every year for Christ. These numbers will rise as we get closer to the end of this age. We must always keep in mind Romans 8:28-39 that we must not let anything come between us and the Kingdom of God. We have so great a witness before us by those who have set the right examples for us to endure to the end of Satan's reign, Hebrew 11:1-39, our faith is being put to the test now.

If we are faithful in the job God gives to us and just not seeking to save our own lives. Because if we seek to save our lives without giving a testimony we can lose our lives for the sake of the Gospel, Matthew 16:15 -27. Jesus will decide who goes where, Revelation 3:7-13, 12:6 and Revelation 3:14- 22. He who has an ear let him or her hear what the Holy Spirit says to the Churches.

      Dear Arkwriter,

Yes , I agree that there may be several places that are suitable. Jesus said some interesting things in Matthew 24:40--42 where he said some would be taken and some would be left. This seems to be after the Tribulation though. Seems like some type of rapture but maybe is th time mentioned in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17. here these verses show the saints that are dead being resurrected first who will meet he rest of saints that are still alive in the air or first heaven before the saints return to the earth with Yahshua to rein for 1,000 years, Revelation 5:10, Revelation 20:4-5.

I'm not so sure about Petra anymore because there is a major highway that goes into it from the rear and not through the Sig narrow entrance. There are already many people living there. Just the same though it can be cleaned out if God wants to use it for his little flock. There are supposed to be a lot of Bibles stored there already for someone.

You seem to be doing a important missionary work here in the USA. So many are not aware of how close things are getting to the end, even in 7th Day Churches. This is very sad. I hope many will listen to you. I have not been to successful with certain ones that should know better.

God continue to bless the work that is being done through all of you,

      Dear Lionswhelps,

      Thank you for your comments.

You wrote:  "Where is this place of safety. It is not clear yet. Could it be Texas? could it be Petra, which has often been refered to by 7th Day Churches. We do know it must be in a Mountanous area mentioned in Isaiah 42:11-13 & Jeremiah 48:28."

Here is my response:  The Bible tells us about "a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands." (Rev. 7:9)  "Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, 'Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where did they come from?  And I said to him, 'Sir, you know.'  So he said to me, 'These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the lamb." (Rev. 7:13-14)

The innumerable multitude of people that are going through the Great Tribulation and washed by the Blood of the Lamb, and then proceed to heaven are from "all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues".  It can only be assumed that God must have prepared many "Places of Refuge" all over the world for them to go.  Although Texas is a good Christian state in the "Bible Belt" for a Place of Refuge, but I am sure God has also prepared other areas in the United States as well.

You wrote: "We do know it must be in a Mountanous area mentioned in Isaiah 42:11-13 & Jeremiah 48:28."

My response:  I have personally visited a Christian community in a mountain area in China.  It is so remote and secluded that the communist government could not control them.  However we should not be dogmatic and insist that the Place of Refuge must be in a mountainous area.  Revelation 12:14 states it is a "wilderness". It can be anywhere! If you read the testimonies of Anne Frank and Corrie Ten Boom, their Places of Refuge are in the attics or underground cellars.

One thing the Bible has clearly pointed out is this.  Only those "who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ" will be brought to the Place of Refuge (Rev. 12:17; 14:12; Ecc. 12:13-14).  It is not a coincidence, but it is God's will that many "commandment-keeping saints" have been revealed about this truth.

Judging by the small number of comments on this hub not many people are interested in what is written here.

Lionswhelps, you are truly blessed by this truth.

      May God bless you.

      Hello Arkwriter,

This is a very interesting topic. Some think that they will be raptured up to heaven but you and i know that some Christians will be taken to a place of safety, Revelation 3:10 and Revelation 12:14-16.

In Revelation 7:1-8 - 144,000 men and women from twelve Tribes of Israel will be sealed at the start of the Great Tribulation that Jesus Christ mentioned in Matthew 24:21-29. There  is a mixed multitude also that will suffer martyrdom at this time, Revelation 7:9-10, these people will be Gentiles and people o fhe Lost Tribes of Israel and Jews from the Tribe of Judah, that have been grafted into Israel but will suffer persecution, Romans 11:1-27.

These people that are martyered will also include the people of the Laodicean Church who are lukewarm and have not been watching world events. There attitude is not right with Jesus Christ so he will put them to the test, Revelation 3:14-22. An interesting point about these hardships for the people of God is that this time was predicted in Jeremiah 30:4-19. This is th time Of Jacob's Trouble which comes on the House of Israel and the House of Judah-the Jews. These verses coincide with Jesus prophecie in Matthew 24:8-9-22.

Where is this place of safety. It is not clear yet. Could it be Texas? could it be Petra, which has often been refered to by 7th Day Churches. We do know it must be in a Mountanous area mentioned in Isaiah 42:11-13 & Jeremiah 48:28. Will the Holy Spirit assemble the sealed people of God in israel and take them to a place of safety for 3 1/2 years, Revelation 12:14? This is not clear yet. Could it be the original place orf safety in Midia or Arabia - Suadi Arabia on the other side of the Gulf of Agaba? See where that place was at the real Mt Sinai @ .We know it will take place somewhere before the Two Witnesses begin to prophecy in Jerusalem for 3 1/2 years, Revelation 11:3-12.

This is a very unique time in history. We must be watching world events? Do you have enough Oil(Holy Spirit) to keep your spiritual lamp lit as the fig tree begins to bare fruit, Matthew 24:32-33, 42 & Matthew 25:1-13. Are you drawing near to God? If you are then God will see you through these hard times, James 4:6-10; Revelation 3:9-10. Can this happen any time? We can be sure of one thing , God will bring these things together according to God's plans in Leviticus 23:1-24. So keep watch!
