Who am I to die?

I had a great opportunity to die a few years back. They told me I would die. But I chose to live. Too bad for docs and statistics that never lie.

I got beat up the other day. Hardcore beat up in a professional manner. My eldest child called and said "dad, what right do you have to give up?"

Dang it, she was right. What right do we have to stop fighting and living? Do you have an out?

Let me know so that I can quit.

You are probably pointing to some very hurtful professional setback. So hurtful that you want to quit for ever, but at the same time a part of you want to fight back. Is this the dilemma?

I was using some literary license here. Being professionally beat up is just what you say "professional setback". I like that term. And quitting forever is a great term.
"Is this the dilemma?" is a great framing of the issue.
(sorry have to go over now and follow you --- very cool)

You begin to live when you cease from your struggles .

Death is realised in you through the fact of your fearfulness.
This fearfulness is present when soever peace is absent.
It is the absence of peace which leads men to think that they need to struggle.

There is no death, Eric! There is giving up on life, but life never gives up on you.

Grandpa Dierker was a producer in the '20s.
