Both. The spirit leaves but lives in either Heaven or hell.

When a person dies, his spirit goes out... meaning the life force he once had perish, stops.. The spirit that departs from humans at death is the life force that originated with our creator.. death is not a fall into neverending torment..

The dead go to the commom grave of mankind. they are conscious of nothing... Remember this: the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear Jesus voice and come out, those who praticed vile things to a resurrection of judgement... for those who act in harmony with the knowledge of God, this will be turn out to be a resurrection of life..

Both.  When your body physically dies, which is energy, your spirit, which is energy, leaves the physical entity, which is no longer generating energy.

The spirit does leave the body and continues on to the next life. This magnificent journey will never end because we are trying to find a meaning to our lives.  We are learning and experiencing every moment of our existence.

Do you actually mean "soul," or "spirit?" The soul and the spirit are connected, but are separable  The soul is the essence of humanity’s being; it is who we are. The spirit is the aspect of humanity that connects with God. From what I read, the soul is asleep when a person dies. In order for the sould to actually leave the body, I'd think that it would have to be resurrected first. I will research this further on my own before I can give you a definite answer.

Nothing ever dies...There is no such thing..death is a human idea....The spirit,lifeforce,God..is eternal....and as for the body it just kind of does something else...now ask me a hard one : )

Man consists of three parts a "Spirit" a "Soul" a "Body".

Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

    Spirit (Breath)
The Spirit is the life giving force of the body, its Hebrew and Greek meaning from scripture is (Ruah) and (Pneuma)

    Soul
The Soul is the person, mind, personality, also the heart of man. Where man thinks. The Hebrew and Greek meaning from scripture is (Nephesh) and (Psuche)

    Body
The body is dust of he ground and in Greek its called "Soma"

To die means the Spirit leaves the body,

Matthew 10:28 and fear not them that kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (fire) (Gehenna)"

Jam 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

you die. though people don't like that idea, it's just how it is. the soul and spirit thing is what gives religion life but it's a falisy. we live , we die and it's over.

Dr. Raymond Moody devoted his entire life to studying Near Death Experiences.

He pointed out that one of the greatest arguments against life after death is the theory that people hallucinate when they are on their deathbeds. But this theory proves to be shallow in the face of thousands of confirmed "out of body experiences" when the person can describe in detail what other people have said, what they wear, and what they are doing in a remote part of the hospital.
Check it out. There is just too much evidence that just can't be shrugged off as "hallucinations".
Not only that, but you don't have power over your spirit after you die. God does.
Jesus said, "Don't be afraid of the person who kills the body. Be afraid of Him, who after you die has the power to throw you into hell. Fear Him". God has the power. Make sure you are right with Him - only made possible by the blood covenant of His dear Son, Jesus
