It would seem that England Captain John Terry is no stranger to controversy. As one of British Football's well known personalities, the press are always interested in any gossip concerning Terry. The juicier the better, I guess is the paparazzi opinion.

The end of 2009 saw allegations in the press that Terry had been taking money which he should not have done. Set up by the press Terry walked straight into the sting and was promptly stung.

Terry survived the accusations but all too soon he is in trouble again.

So who is John Terry?

John Terry is a 29 year old British Premier League footballer. He plays for, and is captain of, London team Chelsea. With the World Cup on the horizon, it is also worth mentioning, that he is the England Football Team's Captain as well.

Here in lies the rub.

A couple of weeks ago the British press managed to acquire information that married man Terry had been having an affair. This was with one of his England team's ex girlfriends. The footballer in question is Wayne Bridge and his ex is called Vanessa Perroncel.

Attempts were made to keep Terry's name out of the press but the courts finally decided to lift the ban against naming Terry.

Apart from all of the obvious issues, my first thoughts, as an old married woman, was to Terry's poor wife. It must be bad enough for your husband to have an affair without it becoming public gossip.

In true Kiss and Tell style, Perroncel has offered her story to the press for a price. I guess it is a case of The Price is Right and the story will go to the highest bidder. Max Clifford is handling all of the sordid details for her. For a fee I guess, but maybe not. It may be out of the goodness of his heart.

Since this story broke the paper's have been full of John Terry news.

With the world experiencing so many problems such as Haiti, war in Afghanistan and Iraq and more I find it hard to believe that this story warrants the attention it is receiving.

Of course all of this publicity by the press guarantees an audience.

Much of the debate has been whether or not Terry is fit to be the England Captain. Secondary is the issue of whether or not his team mates and manager still have confidence in him.

England manager Fabio Cappello is set to meet with Terry in the near future and a decision will be made.

What nonsense.

If Terry had raped someone, or killed someone due to drink driving, then I could understand the furore. However simply letting his sex organs rule his head may be silly but that is all it is.

In the past we have had:-

  • Prince Charles having a long standing affair with Camilla, when he was married to Di. Camilla was a friend of hers.
  • Team Captain David Beckham allegedly having an affair.
  • Bill Clinton and the whole Lewinsky palaver.

I do not mention these people in order to pass judgement but simply to show that Terry's behaviour is nothing new.

Some people seem to feel that Terry has compromised his Captaincy.

I can understand this is some ways. It may be that Terry has lost some his standing in the team. However that does not seem to be the case.

Foreign teams must be laughing their heads off.

With the early rounds of the World Cup on the horizon opposing teams must be enjoying all of this nonsense. The British press is doing a great job of destroying the England team before the matches even start to be played.

When Terry and Chelsea played at my home ground last week the home fans gave Terry a hard time. Shouting abuse at the team, Chelsea only managed a draw. They should have won. Perhaps then this hail of abuse did the trick. This could be a concern for Cappello. However it is up to him to decide and decide quickly. This nonsense needs to be stopped.

In the middle of this are couples and children and such publicity is unnecessary in today's society. It must aldo be very painful for all concerned.

Such extra marital behaviour is all too common these days. This fact makes me wonder just why it is getting blown out of all proportion.

Probably because somewhere along the line there is money to be made.

Update:-This Hub crashed as I was trying to complete it. No doubt due to press reports regarding Terry which were filtering through. It would seem Terry has been stripped of the Cpataincy on 5th February 2010.

So what do you think?

Should John Terry lose his England Captaincy?
