The "Who Dat?" of New Orleans Saints NFL

Getting your hands on New Orleans Saints Logo Office supplies can be perceived as an unusual goal. But when you consider the origin of such an interesting "Who Dat?" phenomenon, the Saints team and the well known chant bring with it the newly earned pride of New Orleans fandom. It's been a long loyal and dusty road from the 1983 "Who Dat?" beginning and Diliberto's paper bag wearing days to where the Saints are today, the World Champion New Orleans Saints that is!

The "Who Dat?" chant was originated long ago in minstrel shows and vaudeville act from the end of the 19TH and early 20Th centuries. Big band musicians and jazz musicians began to scuttle the tune in the 1920s and 30"s. The 19Th Century poet Paul Laurence Dunbar was the supposed author of the chant, which, in sorts, can be found in his poem "When Malindy Sings", which later ended up in the lyrics of the song "Who Dat Say Chicken in dis Crowd," which was a song in the minstrel show "Summer Nights" by E.E. Rice. A familiar line in black minstrel entertainment was the phrase: "Who Dat?" which would be humorously responded to with the phrase "Who Dat say who dat?," far too many black-faced skits used this colloquialism during the vaudevillian era and beyond, and not in a good way.

The 2011 box calendar from Turner™ features great trivia and facts about your Saints NFL® team.

During the swing era many dance houses where live bands performed, would chant back and forth between the band and audience those, "Who Dat" magic words within any group of unknown random words; those two perfect words however were always the anchor for the chants.

Today, the "Who Dat?" of the NFL world is also what you call someone who is a loyal Saints fan!

"Who Dat?" lyrics from 1937:

Who dat up there who’s dat down there
Who dat up there who dat well down there
Who’s dat up there, sayin’ who’s dat down there
When I see you up there well who’s dat down there Who dat inside who’s dat outside
Who’s dat inside who dat well outside
Who’s dat inside, singin’ who’s dat outside
When I see up there well who’s dat out there Button up your lip there big boy
Stop answerin’ back
Give you a tip there big boy
Announce yourself jack Who dat up there who’s dat down there
Who dat up there who dat, well down there
Who’s dat up there, singin’ who’s dat down there
When I see you up there you bum
Well who’s dat down there Who dat

Many stage shows and early movies rendered the chant, however today it has become the living breathing entity that can link all New Orleans Saints fans to one another forever! You can be in restaurant in California and hear those two words, "Who Dat?" and instantly your head swings around making eye contact with the speaker and you know, without another word you are in the company of a New Orleans Saints fan!

The chant rose to new highs when those Saints came Marching in and took away with them the 2010 NFL World Championship trophy, while chanting "Who Dat? Drew Dat!" all the way to their destiny!
