National College Football Awards: State by State Rank

Updated on February 6, 2018
Larry Rankin profile image

Larry Rankin is a sports analyst with an especially strong penchant for statistical breakdowns.

This article ranks U.S. states in the production of national college football award winning athletes in both the per capita and overall number of awards categories on the FBS level. In such a ranking system there are a number of varying criteria that can be used. For the purpose of this listing the author has organized the winners by their birth states. For example, Billy Sims was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but moved to Texas as a child and eventually played football at Oklahoma. Billy Sims’ awards go to the ranking tally of Missouri because it is his birth state.

In addition, a number of award winning athletes were born in other countries or Washington D.C. As a result, their awards are not credited to a state. For example, Tim Tebow was born in the Philippines and Robert Griffin III was born in Japan. Andrew Luck was born in Washington D.C., so their names appear on no state’s tally.

48 national awards were used to gather the following information (Every national award that could be found, with exception of All Americans). Some of these awards are defunct, some are new, and some have been around for over three-quarters of a century. For objectivity, each award is rated equally as one point in each state’s tally. In other words, award prestige is not weighted.

Below you will find a table for quick reference ranking the states by per capita score and overall number of awards. The per capita score is simply the number of said state’s awards divided by said state’s population. The decimal point and zeros before this number have been removed to increase visual palatability of the score. For example, Oklahoma’s actual per capita score is .00001324. Alabama’s actual per capita score is .00000786. They have been changed to 1,324 and 786 respectively.

Below the table you will find each state listed in order of per capita score with an itemized list of award winners.showing the year each player won the award and the college they played for.
