Simple Surfing Etiquette

5 Simple Surfing Tips

It seems where ever you go there is almost always someone that does not what to play by the rules. Or maybe they think that they are above the rules. I do not like rules but some rules can benefit everyone especially when you are trying to catch waves at a crowded surf break.

In surfing there are a few basic universal rules. They are sort of unspoken rules and if you do not know some of the basic rules of surfing you will probably see a pissed off surfer paddling up to you screaming that you dropped in on his wave.

The first time I heard that I was like What? Then the huge guy said he had the wave first!

Huh???? As if that mattered right??? Well it does! Its not only a safety issue in the water but its common sense to allow the surfer that catches that wave first and is closest to the curl have the wave to themselves!

So Ok

#1. If you see someone paddling for a wave and they are closest to the breaking part of the wave let them have the wave and stay out of their way.

#2.If you happen to catch a wave and you do not have priority kick off and stop riding the wave.

#3. Do not snake other surfers , Sure we have all seen the old dude on the inside missing all the scrap waves. He probably wont care if you snake him because he isnt catching any waves. but if you snake a proficient surfer he may get pissed!

#5.Paddle at the white wash when a surfer is coming at you and try to stay out of his way.

If a surfer is becoming aggressive to you paddle away from him, when I surfer in California there were surf spots that had very aggressive surfers. Avoid these surfers and their surf-breaks!

Check out the Surfing Video. These guys are good and long time surfers.
