Best Outdoor Knives

Best five outdoor knives review, comparison and everything you need to know about buying a perfect knife for outdoor activities.

When you are doing outdoor activity you definitely need some equipment with you. Amount of equipment depends on duration and type of your activity. If you are going for short hike, run or trek, water will be sufficient. For whole day or longer activities you should consider taking appropriate equipment with you. Knife is definitely important tool for one day or longer outdoor activitiy. It should be in a backpack of every backpacker, fisher, hiker and mountaineer.

Knife will make your activity safe and comfortable. You can use it for different purposes. In most cases you will use knife for food preparation but if something goes wrong you will use it as a survival tool. It is definitely the most important part of your survival equipment. You can use it for self-defense, first aid, shelter building, fire making, hunting, splitting, digging and much more.

Outdoor knives must have appropriate size, folding blade and sharp pointed tip. Size is important because you don’t want to carry large, heavy knife with you all day or even several days, especially if you will not be needing knife like that. Folding blade makes knife handy and smaller so it will fit perfectly into your backpack or in your pocket. Sharp pointed tip is important if knife is used in survival purpose.

So which are the best outdoor knives?

Zero Tolerance G10

Zero Tolerance G10
Zero Tolerance G10

Zero Tolerance G10

Zero Tolerance G10 is in my opinion the best knife currently on the market for outdoor activities. The knife is reasonably sized and has assisted opening flipper design which enables you to unfold the knife quickly no matter which hand you use. You can even adjust the speed of unfolding the knife with tightening/releasing the screw. When you have this knife in hands you see that quality was priority when designed. It has pocket clip with which you can attach the knife on your pocket or gear. The clip can be mounted on all four sides of the knife. The only bad side of this knife is that it is quite heavy for that size. This is the bad side of the robust design. But the knife is defenitely worth carrying it.

Pros:

  • Robust design
  • Quality
  • SpeedSafe
  • Adjustable clip

Cons:

  • Weight

Kershaw OSO Sweet

Kershaw OSO Sweet

Kershaw OSO is a solid knife designed perfectly for outdoor use. The main benefit of this knife is quality/price ratio. SpeedSafe opener will allow you to unfold the knife quickly and safely. The handle has nice design and also good grip. It really suits nice in the hand because of the ergonomic design of the handle. It has pocket clip which allows you to carry it on different places. You can move the clip from one side of the knife to the other. If you want good knife for good price this is knife you should buy.

PROS:

  • Price
  • Quality
  • Movable clip

CONS:

  • Pocket clip too strong

Spyderco Resilience G-10

Spyderco Resilience G-10
Spyderco Resilience G-10

Spyderco Resilience G-10

Spyderco Resilience G1-10 is a good knife for outdoor use. In comparison to Zero Tolerance G10 and Kershaw OSO it lacks the SpeedSafe feature. It has hole in the blade which allows you to open the knife easier, but it is still not as handy as SpeedSafe System. That makes this knife a bit unhandy to unfold it. The handle has a hole where you can put a cord to carry it. Otherwise you can carry this knife with the pocket clip which can be mounted on four sides of the knife. The knife suits nicely to the hand and the price is quite appropriate comparing to quality.

Pros:

  • Quality
  • Weight

Cons:

  • No SpeedSafe feature

Ka-Bar Mule

Ka-Bar Mule
Ka-Bar Mule

Ka-Bar Mule

Ka-Bar Mule is quite heavy knife but still appropriate for outdoor use. If the weight is bad side of this knife, ergonomic handle is the good side. The knife is heavy because of the ergonomic handle which suits perfectly in the hand and has a good slip resistance. Because of the weight you will probably carry it in the backpack. Anyway it has pocket clip which you can move from right side to the left side. There is a hole in the handle where you can put cord to carry the knife or to tie the knife on your equipment. It can help you not losing the knife during your activity. In comparison to above mentioned knives this one has a lockback lock.

Pros:

  • Quality
  • Handle Material

Cons:

  • Bad paintjob on the blade
  • Pocket clip

Gerber 31-000752 Bear Grylls

Gerber 31-000752 Bear Grylls is an excellent survival knife suitable for outdoor activities. In comparison to above mentioned this knife is in orange and gray color which is perfect for the survival purpose. You definitely don’t want to lose you knife in emergency. Orange color makes this knife well visible. It doesn’t have SpeedSafe feature but it can also be opened with one hand (left or right). It has lockback lock which ensures that the knife is safely locked when using it. In the packet with knife there is also nylon sheath which is very resistant and Bear Grylls survival guide. The guide is a big bonus which you can use if you are in troubles in the nature. I would recommend this knife to those who want good knife for good price.

Pros:

  • Handle Material

Cons:

  • Opening system
  • Blade Sharpness
