Was the WWE punishment towards Hulk Hogan too severe?

Hulk Hogan was fired/resigned from the WWE, was also removed from the WWE Wrestling Hall of Fame, and his character removed from the upcoming WWE 2K 16 due to an incident that happened 8 years ago. He said racial slurs during a sex tape with his best friend's wife.

I feel WWE should have stood by hiim since he helped make the WWE what it is today. If anything he should have been suspended for a a few months and made to make a public apology.

"Yo, Hulk, you wanna bang your buddy's wife and tape it, that's not a problem, but dropping the N-word while you're doing it? Not cool, bro."

It's a strange world we live in.

I live in the same city as Hulk Hogan. He was going on a downward spiral at the time with the crash of his son (left son's best friend in a near vegetable state - litigation was pending), problems with his wife, etc. The pressure got him to do things that he admits he is not proud of. It has taken him years to improve his life, I think it is sad the WWE didn't try to stand by him.
