Old snooker balls used to be made out of ivory until the 1920's, when compound materials were used but these had a tendency to explode.
The new Snooker balls are made out of Aramith or Phenolic resin.
Aramith Balls are the best to play with as they are easily influenced with spin and will not hold kenetic energy.

Earlier the balls were made of clay and wood. Later in 1627, ivory was favored to build the billiard balls.
By the mid 19th century, elephants were being slaughtered for ivory caused an alarming site, as the elephants were endangered.
The first artificial substance to be used for the balls was invented by John Wesley Hyatt in 1869 called the nitrocellulose.
