Old snooker balls used to be made out of ivory until the 1920's, when compound materials were used but these had a tendency to explode.

The new Snooker balls are made out of Aramith or Phenolic resin.

Aramith Balls are the best to play with as they are easily influenced with spin and will not hold kenetic energy.
