During a run do you allow a count down of 15 seconds, so the cat can swallow the entire bait

before setting the hook, or soon as you have a run and feel the weight of the fish in order to set hook. I've had trouble several times on a run where I feel the weight of the cat after a run, or a given count and set the hook and feel my hook pull right out of the bait while the cat still has it in its mouth. Any suggestions to improve my odds of landing more flats.

Perhaps the problem is not with the timing. Have you tried different hooks. I prefer a shorter offset shank. These give a better angle for hooking

I fish for channel cats and white catfish, which probably behave quite differently than flatheads but in my situation, circle hooks have proven to work well.

Circle hooks do require a different technique, but once an angler gets used to using them, they tend to be very effective.
