Do You Know Who Jackie Robinson Is?
Yes he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Now those were the days. I wish they were still in Brooklyn. Jackie was great. One of the best ever. Did you ever get to watch him play?
No, I didn't. I am too young for that, however, I, being well versed on MLB history, know about Jackie Robinson. Jack Roosevelt Robinson played in the Negro Leagues, the International League, and of course, the MLB. He served in the army too. He was a great guy. I wish he would have lived longer than he did, (born January 31th 1919, died October 24th 1972, at the age of 53).
When I was a kid (8 years old?) I read a biography of Jackie Robinson. It began with a young Branch Rickey (the executive who signed Robinson to a contract in 1946) consoling a Black ballplayer-- sometime around 1912-- because it was impossible for Black players to reach the majors. As Rickey explained the situation, the player began crying, and then tried to scratch the skin off his arm in anguish. The imagery of that scene in the book has haunted me ever since.
