** High schools = 25,000 or there about
    ** High School football teams in U.S. = 14,247 (2019-2020)
** Players = boys more than a million, Girls around 4,000
** Friday high school games = approximately 7,123
** The fan base = over 7 million
** Colleges/universities scout players. So does the NFL.
    ** Players that receive a scholarship = 1 – 2%
    ** College/university players that reach the NFL = 1.6%

The bottom line is, that high school football is very popular!! Remember the movie Friday Night Lights? All people – fans, coaches, and players, are filled full of dreams and hope.

And, it is at the forefront of big business too. In the year 2022, the NFL's total revenue was approximately 19 billion dollars. Colleges and universities on average bring in 32 million each.

Are you a fan of high school football? I am. I am fortunate that a local TV station, KUSI, broadcasts a show on late Friday nights known as Pigskin Reports. It is for the greater San Diego County, California. The reporting summarizes with video a percentage of the games focusing on big rivalries and league leaders. Fun to watch!!

This week was a biggie. Rancho Bernardo High School is coached by the infamous Eric Weddle of NFL fame. He was a safety/defensive back for the San Diego Chargers, the Baltimore Ravens, and as a Super Bowl winner with the Los Angeles Rams. He is a six-time All Pro.

Who is the opponent? It is Del Norte High School coached by none other than Nick Barnett. He is of NFL fame, too, playing in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, and the Washington Redskins. He was a defensive linebacker also receiving an All Pro recognition. He, too, won a Super Bowl ring.

They both are in their first year as a head coach. They both played defense in the NFL. They are both in the same league. Entering into the big game Del Norte (Barnett) stands at 4 – 1. Rancho Bernardo (Weddle) at 3 – 2.

Most certainly in its own right a face off of intrigue and excitement. The game sold out. Yup, it actually required a ticket to go to the game. The school rivalry certainly entered the fray.

Of course, it is really about the players, right?

As it turns out it went into overtime four times. Imagine that with high school football. The final score is:

    ** Rancho Del Norte, 49 (Coached by Barnett) Now, 5 - 1

    ** Rancho Bernardo, 43 (Coached by Weddle) Now, 3 – 3

The league is shaping up pointing to a leader of the pack.

Note: No articles at this time not hidden by a paywall.

Are you a fan of high school football?

    Were you a player?

Perhaps, a cheerleader, on the pep squad, or a performing band member?

Is it big in your local?
