Herkimer Diamonds are not diamonds. It is a misleading name of a Quartz gemstone from the Herkimer area in New York. Other names associated with these Stones are Little Falls Diamonds and Middleville Diamonds based on the area where they are mined. The Herkimer Diamond is double pointed (meaning that the crystal comes to a point at each end) Quartz Crystal that has already been faceted by nature. Another distinguishing character of this gemstone is its high degree of clarity. While it is not actually Diamond it is often seen resembling the sparkling clarity of diamonds which may be the reason why they are called so. It could also have been given that name as a marketing tactic to promote the sales of these gemstones. However, very rarely one may also get to see a Stone in smoky (brownish) color instead of white or colorless.

Herkimer Diamond has a hardness rating of 7.5 on the Mohs scale and is associated with the Crown chakra. These stones are widely used as gemstone for jewelry and healing.
