What Do Hand Painted Silk Scarves and Shawls Say About Their Wearers?

Updated on August 25, 2015

To even a casual observer, what we wear or carry may speak volumes about our individual personality. Whether it is the clothing we have on, our make-up, our jewelry, or any type of accessory - it all says something about who we are or want to be. Whatever we appear in, someone will interpret it – true or not.

Imagine if you will, the American woman dressed in sweat pants with tattered sneakers on her feet.

In a garden, she looks natural, not worthy of a comment.

At school, dropping off or picking up her children, she blends in with many busy mothers.

In other situations though, you would be more judgmental. It might cross your mind that here was a woman who did not care how she looked – no matter how inappropriate her outfit may be.

Contrast this with someone draped in a dramatic hand painted silk shawl or scarf. Your impression of such a woman would be more favorable. This would hold true whether she was at work, shopping, meandering through a park, dining in a fine restaurant or walking the infamous red carpet on Oscar night. The imagistic words forming inside your head would be “sophisticated” and “fashionable.” You might think here to be a woman who knows and appreciates magnificence. She is someone comfortable with herself, her needs and who she obviously is.

This all dates back to impressions. First impressions tend to mark us forever as a certain type of person. As a result, we get treated accordingly. A woman in sweatpants and sneakers entering the same high-class retailer as a woman wearing a hand designed silk scarf or shawl, is likely to be given short shrift. This tends to be true even if the silk scarf is incorporated into an ensemble of plain blue jeans and a simple sweater.

Women rarely have the type of budget allowing for unlimited spending on such things as clothes, let alone accessories. In most cases, the amount of money to spend is small. This does not mean you have to settle for anything that does not radiate class and fashion. An elegant handmade silk shawl or scarf can exalt a basic, simple and inexpensive item of clothing from the ranks of the decidedly normal and ordinary to those of swanky sophistication. What is even better – it can manage this without emptying your wallet.

Magnificent silk scarves are the signature of many a personality or film icon. Yet, their sheer accessibility makes them suitable for women of all ages around the globe. Wearing them, helps women of all types to capture a little magic, exude a sense of fashion and stand out in the proverbial jaundiced crowd.  Wearing a sumptuous silk scarf or shawl provides that certain je ne sais quoi , declaring its wearer to be truly a woman of discernment. Would you have it any other way?
