Printed in the sense of having a design on them?

Simple. They show an ability to be unique and express yourself in what you wear. Not only do you have to follow the social convention of wearing a certain type of clothes, but you have a little or no choice in what those items are most the time. E.g Men can wear a t-shirt or Shirt or a Jumper. Everyone looks the same. The only thing to bring difference and individuality is colour and design!!

It lets people show who they are through their clothes.

There is so much variation it is extremely hard to answer your question but yeah a maroon and green based tops seem to be all the rage in Australia at the moment at least!

I agree with naeemebrahimjee. It's a form of expression. I have a teenager who expresses himself through what he wears. He doesn't conform to what the majority of his high school wears. However, others feel the need to criticize those who choose to be different.
He usually gets some comment from those who are ignorant on a daily basis. He wears printed tees quite often. He likes to wear printed tees which reflect his taste in music.
As you see in the picture, not traditional Homecoming attire. He dared to be different.
