Success Tools - Setting Goals

Updated on April 8, 2012

“The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.” Bill Copeland

My previous Hub on Success Tools is: Success Tools – Motivational Books As stated in that Hub, success is not just about money. If that was the case we wouldn’t have so many millionaires still committing suicide. Some people have all the money in the world, but have no purpose anymore in life.

Goal Setting is another important tool for success in life. It’s useful to set specific goals for different areas of our lives:

  • Relationships (with partners / with our kids)
  • Finance
  • Career
  • Health
  • Personal Projetcs
  • and more...

To get started we could start by asking ourselves where we would want to be in 2 years time or maybe just one year. We could even make it very short-term (6 months) Once we have established this – it gives us a goal to work towards and all we need to do, is note down one or two actions that will help us achieve it.

Example: If you want to lose a bit of weight. What actions could you take?

  • - changing diet?
  • - Exercising?
  • - Eating less?
  • - Going to the gym?

Or

Maybe you want improved communication with your Teen. It’s not nice when they confide in other people and to make matters worse, get bad counselling.

Example of goals for above could be:

  • - Setting a side 1 or 2 evenings a week to do something nice/creative with your Teen or just chat about anything. Gradually, they will open up more to you.
  • - Taking an interest in things they do.

Once we take action on any of these, our bond with our Teens becomes stronger and they woudn’t even hide things from us. There will be more openness.

Ps. A 12 year old Dutch girl gave birth while on a school trip this April 2011. She had bad stomach cramps and didn’t know she was pregnant - neither did her parents. She has now been put in Foster Care.

The most important thing about Achieving goals is to take action. If we write them down, read them every day and do nothing, there will be no positive changes.

Goal quotes

“Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination.”
Fitzhugh Dodson

“I feel that the most important step in any major accomplishment is setting a specific goal. This enables you to keep your mind focused on your goal and off the many obstacles that will arise when you’re striving to do your best.”
Kurt Thomas

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
Henry David Thoreau

“Progress has little to do with speed, but much to do with direction.”
