10 Awesome Blogs

Updated on November 21, 2011

If you are like me, you spend quite a bit of time online, reading blogs. Sometimes they become a distraction or an excuse not to get my real work done.

There are some blogs that I return to daily, if not multiple times a day. These are essential for me to keep up with what is going on and give me new ideas on what to write about. What follows is a list of my favorite blogs. Obviously this list is based on my personal interests. Hopefully you can find one or two that wil make it on your favorites list.

So what makes a good blog. First of all, good content. Second, updating. If there is great content and a new post once a month, there will likely not be many readers unless you are very famous. Third, a great personality. Some blogs are carried by one person, and some are group blogs. If you have a solo blog, you better be goodl.

So here’s my list of favorite blogs (links appear at bottom of article):

1. The Simple Dollar -

This personal finance blog is pretty much the gold standard of “personal finance.” Trent Hamm built this site by sharing how he went from buried in debt to debt free, working at home as a freelance writer and blogger. This is what I aspire to. This blog is packed with great tips, straightforward, consistent advice, and a personalized touch by incorporating his family. Best of all, The Simple Dollar has not sold out to big banks and you will rarely, if ever, find Trent hawking a product.

2. Get Rich Slowly -

This personal finance blog started out as a project to chronicle the debt freedom quest of founder J.D. Roth. As it became very popular, he turned it into a group blog that offers fresh content daily. This site advocates my personal finance methods, which is hard work over time.

3. BoingBoing -

From the truly weird, to tech news, occult, gaming, etc, this group blog has it all. Visit here daily, if not multiple times per day. Plenty of content to keep you engaged and searching. Much inspiration for new topics and memes to cover.

4. Gawker -

This is the flagshop of Nick Denton’s conglomerate of blogs, but it is a great place to stay hip on current events in news and entertainment. Updated multiple times a day with a witty and caustic style that has brought them millions of loyal readers.

5. Blog of Tim Ferriss -

If you don’t know Tim Ferriss, then you don’t know lifestyle design. The author of the Four Hour Workweek and the Four Hour Body regularly shares tips and ideas on how you can get serious about building the life you want, by your rules, so you can get what you want. Updated weekly, or less often, which is why I subscribe to his RSS feed to make sure I don’t forget to check it.

6. Largehearted Boy -

I don’t know much about this blog, except that it is a great place to listen to and download cutting edge music and get recommendations for new books and literature. Great roundups of interesting articles around the web.

7. Some Kind of Awesome -

Another music blog that is regularly updated with new music from my favorite genres, indie and hip hop, especially where these two genres meet. Great videos and content, and a beautiful layout.

8. SurvivalBlog -

This is the number one online site for preparing for any conceivable emergency. Daily articles by preppers, doctors, and extremists. Warning, some of the stuff on here borders on paranoid and conspiracy, but the practical advice comes from true experts. You could never compile all the research and hands on knowledge contained here by yourself.

9. I Will Teach You to Be Rich -

Ramit Sethi, author of the popular book “I Will Teach You to Be Rich,” has a great motivational blog. Ramit preaches automating your finaces and putting them on autopilot so you don’t miss out on payments, transfers, etc. He also preaches “Big Wins”and conscious spending, which means you shouldn’t deprive your life of the things you love, just find smart ways to save for it.

10. A Newbie’s Guide to Self Publishing -

I only recently discovered this bog, by author JA Konrath. He is the messiah of self publishing, and has made quite a bit of money doing it. I like reading his preaching of the death of the traditional publishers, and because I recently decided to finish my novel and self publish it on Kindle, the archives on this site are invaluable.

I hope you found this list informative, and that you maybe found a new daily destination when you are bored. I love finding new distractions and blogs, so if you know of any sites I missed, please share in comments.
