A Cheap, Lightweight Word Processor called the Alphasmart Neo

Updated on February 1, 2015

One of the best tools for writing is the Alpha Smart Neo Word Processing Computer. Now you may not have heard of this wonderful contraption before so I'm going to introduce it to you. I found out about the Alpha Smart Neo Word Processing Computer by stumbling upon it in the back of a writers magazine. I had never seen it before and I've never seen it since, it is not sold in stores. I had been looking for something like it for sometime as I wanted something that had a full keyboard but didn't cost a fortune like some of the tinier computers did. The cost was under $170.00 bucks, however the one advertised on was less than $50.00 used, something even I could afford!

The Alpha Smart Neo is great for writing in cafes because you don't need to sit by an outlet. It runs on two AA batteries. It will run for over seven hours straight on the batteries...try to get that kind of time out of your lap-top! And, if the batteries do run low, just change them. It also is very lightweight, weighing only a little over two pounds and it comes with its own carrying case that you can wear strapped around you. I especially enjoy the lightweight aspect of it as I carry it all over Manhattan. When I have some time to kill I just find the nearest Starbucks and type away, because it is so lightweight I never hesitate to take it with me. It is also the perfect tool for camping or writing in the park as outlets for computers are difficult to find amongst the dirt and trees. Almost every time I use my Alpha Smart Neo someone comes up to me and asks me what it is. I enjoy telling them all about it and letting them think I'm some famous writer conjuring up the next Harry Potter, Sex in the City or The Devil Wears Prada book, who knows...maybe someday!

The keyboard also comes with a spellchecker, word count and a screen so that you can see what you are writing. Everything you write is automatically saved as you write it. It has 8 files to sort your work and a phenomenal amount of room. You can go for weeks without running out of space. If you do run out, simply download your files into your Word program on your PC or Mac computer and erase the files on your Alpha Smart Neo, it's like erasing a blackboard.

Even though I have a lap-top, many times I prefer the Alpha Smart Neo Word Processor because it forces me to write. Sometimes the world wide web can be a little distracting, interrupting me when I am trying to concentrate on my writing. If you are looking for the perfect little world processor either in lieu of a lap-top or in addition to a lap top you can't go wrong with the Alpha Smart Neo Word Processor.

I just bought myself an AlphaSmart 3000 for National Novel Writing Month. I am sure I will find it to be very helpful for writing while at work.

      Thanks for commenting Marisa.

Sunforged: I don't know what format the files are saved in. But, yes after you have downloaded it you can re-edit it in Word...that's what I do.

What format are the files saved in? After opening on your PC can you re-edit, compose in MS Word?

It does seem like a nifty gadget, I have a netbook and although its ultra-portable it really is to easy to get distracted - it would be great too just be limited to writing sometimes!

I had completely forgotten about this fabulous little machine! I used to be a member on the Harlequin Writers Forum and there were so many writers there who had an Alpha Smart and loved it. The much longer battery life is great for people who want to write while commuting.

I'm sure Amazon would soon adjust their stock levels if they realise an affiliate is promoting them.Good luck

I too have never heard of this machine, I can really see the appeal as you are right when most writers sit down at a computer screen; they end up on the WWW in the name of research.
