A New Style of iPhone MMO

Updated on March 15, 2011

Aren't there iPhone MMO's Already?

There are hundreds of games on the iPhone app store claiming to be MMO's, however you don't have to play them for long to realize that you never really interact that much with other players, you might have an occasional battle with a randomly chosen player around your level, but chances are you will never make friends, join a clan, and talk regularly with these people.

There are however a new breed of games arriving on the iPhone, and these games incorporate the iPhone MMO idea, with some pretty unique concepts, including Augmented Reality, to create a truly immersive 3D environment which you can explore with other players.

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality is when you overlay a virtual world on the real world through your iPhone camera. Using augmented is a great way to create an augmented world around the real world, and it is being increasingly explored by games such as Traveller-AR.

Using Augmented Reality can create a virtual overlay over the real world, mixing fantasy with reality.

Why is this a New Era of iPhone MMO's?

The new era of iPhone MMO games really will be a new era.  Currently most iPhone games which claim to be MMO's do not include the interaction which turns a game played by thousands in to an MMO.  The new breed of MMO games will be much more similar to games such as World of Warcraft, and less like games such as Evony sans-community.

Building a true iPhone MMO has been a difficult proposition with the limited hardware inside the iPhone. Fortunately with advanced coding techniques being used, new techniques have beenn developed to make iPhone MMORPG a real possibility.
