The Smartphone Generation

The smartphone has been around for at least a few years now - over 15 years! The first foray into the smartphone was by Ericsson according to Wikipedia in 1997.

Then, within a few years, PDAs (Palm Pilots and Blackberry) were added to the smartphone market.

But it wasn't until 2007, that the iPhone by Apple was introduced with the multi-touch interface screen.

Then in 2008, the first Android based Smartphone was introduced to be sold on the market.

I, myself, owned a Blackberry, then an iPhone (still an iPhone owner). My husband actually owned an early Palm Pilot in the early 2000s, as well.

But we have truly come a long way and now Amazon, the makers of the Kindle have decided to introduce their version of the Smartphone, called the Kindle Phone.

The Amazon Kindle Phone

So, Amazon, who seems to have the corner on the market with the Kindle and pretty much everything else you could want, is now producing for purchase an Amazon Fire phone.

I will admit, I am a tried and true Apple fan. I own a MacBook Pro, an iPad Retina and even an iPhone 4.

My iPhone, sadly, is one of the older ones on the market still and I am due for an upgrade with ATT.

Not going to lie, I have been trying to wait for an announcement from Apple on a new, updated iPhone closer to in size to the Samsung Galaxy.

When I heard the news about Amazon introducing the Kindle Fire Phone, I was seriously intrigued, since I own a Kindle Fire (love it) and also use the Kindle app on my iPad and iPhone, as well, to read Amazon Kindle books.

So, I decided to get the goods on this phone so that I can make an informed decision when I am ready.

I thought I could also share with all who may be interested, too.

Sit back and find out a bit more about this new smartphone.

What Makes the Amazon Fire Phone a Contender?

There is stiff competition on the market for Smartphones with the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy right now.

For sometime, the iPhone was truly the king, but as of late, the Samsung has gained a fair share of this market since the phone itself is a much larger and impressive phone. The Galaxy size has many looking at the iPhone as inferior just for this reason alone. Not to mention the iPhone's operating system has been seemingly coming up short in recent updates.

I speak from experience, as my iPhone has paled in comparison to my kid brother's brand new Galaxy 5 in both size (5.6 in height) and operating capacity not to mention the camera on the phone being impressive as well with 16 Megapixels, where as my iPhone is definitely dwarfed (4.87 in height) in size and has 8.0 Megapixel camera.

The new Amazon Kindle Fire Phone is definitely a contender though in height being 5.5" and has 13 Megapixel camera. As far as height it is only a tenth of a point smaller then the Galaxy, but the camera is indeed 3 megapixels less.

The Kindle Phone camera would appear to be not as good in quality, but still better the the iPhone.

So, why choose the Kindle Phone over the Samsung Galaxy 5?

Simple, you get way more storage for $199. The Kindle Phone has 32 GB for hundreds less and even if you were to go with the 64 GB storage adding a hundred dollars would still bring you only to $299, which is indeed less then the Samsung Galaxy at $589.80!

Plus, with the Amazon Kindle Phone, you get a year free of Amazon Prime, which normally costs almost $80 annually.

Prime affords you all sorts of amazing rewards, such as free two day shipping on millions of items, unlimited streaming of top TV shows and movies, including entertaining and educational kid's shows, such as Tumble Leaf, new prime music with unlimited streaming and downloading millions of songs, as well as Kindle Owner's Library, where you can borrow a great book - at least one a month from popular titles, current and former best sellers alike.

Seriously, that feature alone is a huge bonus for many that I know, including myself who is a huge book lover.

Bottom Line on the Amazon Fire Phone

Although this phone, has yet to be released, but will be on July 25, 2014, I will admit once again that I am intrigued and definitely excited. I cannot wait to see what this will mean for the smartphone and cannot wait to see it in person to decide for myself if I am a contender for switching from my trusty iPhone to the Amazon Fire Phone.

Like I said, this phone definitely sounds impressive and the perks are looking better and better to an iPhone/Apple junkie like myself.

Time will still, of course, tell, but I am totally in the market for an upgrade and am an ATT customer, so I will totally be keeping this phone on my short list for upgrades now.

And hope you will, too!

Thank you so much Carter06 and will say I too have a slight addiction to all things Apple, but my curiosity got the better of me and needed to know more. And then thought I could at the very least share with all what I found out. So, happy I could do that here and thanks always for your support and kind words, too!

I totally promised Cyndi and swear you gave me the inspiration to write a new Hub. Love you for that and so much more. But seriously, you know I am obsessed with my Apple products, but still am a bit obsessed with the thought of a new phone by Amazon, so I had to do my research as you can see!

I love smartphones particularly the Iphone which this reminds me of. It was only a matter of time before they made a smartphone mostly because just about everyone has one now. Overall great hub. Thanks. Voted up.

Great review. Now...I still can't decide: iPhone5 or a Amazon Fire...I do love my apple products...

Billy, I was seriously so excited to be writing a Hub again and sat down believe it or not this past Sunday night when it was quiet to get this one down. I missed writing on here and not sure if I can write as much as once did here, but definitely want to write more articles here then I have been. And thank you for coming by. My mom finally got a Smartphone this past Christmas (we bought her one as her Christmas gift from us) and now I can't get her off the thing. So, you never know!! :)

Wow! I saw a hub by you, and I dropped what I was doing and rushed over. Very nice to see an article from you, Janine.

I don't own a smartphone....I'm sure eventually I'll break down and get one. Thanks for the review of this might be too technical for me. :)
