Best Backup Software 2016

Updated on November 13, 2015

We keep so much of our important personal and work information on our computers. It is vital that you securely backup this data, so you can get it back if our hard disk fails. Using the right backup software means you can rest assured that no matter what happens to your PC, your information will be there when you need it.

There are many backup software options, but we have picked the top 3 to review in best backup software 2016:

  • Genie Backup Manager - We found this software package to be the easiest to use.
  • Norton Ghost - This was the best budget option.
  • Acronis True Image - Acronis had the best feature set of all the backup utilities we looked at.

There are certain things one should look for when buying a backup software package:

  • Ease of use - The use of the software should be intuitive and convenient, a novice should be able to set it up and use it.
  • The features - The program should go beyond just copying files. It should allow you to schedule backups of what you want, when you want it.
  • Help system - Backing up and restoring a system can be tricky; the help should provide clear step by step instructions.

Symantec Norton Ghost

Norton Ghost is an old player in the data protection business. It has the reputation of being one of the most powerful and capable software solutions available. Initially their backup software wasn't very good, but they refined it over time into a very impressive package.

Compared to the previous version Symantec Norton Ghost 15 has improved flexibility as well as more features to cater to everyone's data protection needs. This software is suitable for both home and office use. One of the most significant improvements is the recovery CD image creation. The software now allows the user to make images from the boot disc. It is one of the most capable 'cold imaging' software systems available. Cold imaging technique allows you to recover or restore files in the event that your system fails to boot.

The main tasks that Norton Ghost performs are divided into backup, recovery and conversions. It also uses the 'Symantec Threat Con' which in turn uses the information from 'Symantec Security Response'. This initiates automated file backup whenever a specific threat level is reached for instance if a data limit is reached or a computer virus is detected. The software allows for the backup of the whole system. It is equally useful when, backup of certain specific files is required.

In addition to the other tons of features the software is windows 7 compatible. It works with both 25G and 50G Blu-ray discs. It also supports a variety of storage drives. This includes network drives, external storage drives, and rewritable CDs and DVDs.

In short Norton Ghost is a very powerful and versatile data recovery software package. It is an excellent choice for those who are serious about data protection and works well with other Norton utilities.

Personally I have found that open source software meets my demands more than the paid versions out there. However I have used Acronis and did enjoy it's simple GUI. Nice article.

      Hello JGaunt,

You are absolutely right, there are many backup software options out there that can be overwhelming for anyone that has to choose one. I have to admit that am a little biased toward open-source software and my preferences are Bacula, Amanda and BackupPC. These are all real good options that rival with any enterprise-grade backup software out there. For a very small network that can live with a local backup (that seats behind a firewall) my preference is BackupPC. It's not too terrible to set up in a Linux server, no agent is needed at the hosts, and has a nice web-based GUI that makes backing up / restoring a very simple process. Despite that the application will reside in a Linux box, the hosts being backed up can be Windows, Linux or MacOS. You may also want to give BackupPC a try in the future!

For bare-metal backups, I typically use clonezilla. You can't go wrong with a combination of clonezilla once every other month and regular backup of data with BackupPC.

      Thanks for sharing !

When you decide to use any software for the back up it is essential to rely on its functionality completely. Software should possess compatibility with all kinds of files and formats and types of OS as well.
