Best Windows 7 Mobile Apps

Updated on December 2, 2010

For the longest time it was thought that there would be no competition against the iPhone, or any apple products in general. First came the iPhone 3, then the iPhone 4, then the iPad - they, in a word, seemed unstoppable.

Luckily, or maybe unluckily, there are other big corporations out there who have money, have the man power, and the technical/marketing genius. Remember Microsoft? As far as mobile phones go, Microsoft had been quiet for years, letting Apple and other smaller companies (Samsung, LG for example) rule. Then, suddenly, they announce the release of a windows 7 cell phone.

The windows 7 mobile phone is like the anti-iPhone: instead of being allowed endless options, a home screen that can be filled with thousands of apps, you're given a much simpler, and cleaner, outlook. Three or four main icons fill the home screen - it's meant to get you in quickly and get you out even quicker. Their tagline (which I find very refreshing) is something along the lines of 'its time for a phone to save us from our phones.

The other big thing that the Windows 7 phone is, other than being much simpler, is the windows 7 mobile apps. They designed to give iPhone apps, and the entire apps store, a run for it's money. Right now the pickings are slim - but that doesn't mean the quality isn't.

Some of the best windows cell phone apps are ones that come with the phone; other top windows 7 phone apps will be released later as more and more phones become windows 7 compatible. The point, though, is this: the best windows 7 mobile applications will compete with the best iPhone applications.

iPhone apps or windows 7 app? You be the judge.

Thumba Photo Editor

One of the best windows 7 cell phone applications currently on the market is the Thumba Photo Editor. As far as window 7 best apps are concerned, this one of my favorite. Why? Because of it's cool design, how it is integrated with the windows 7 mobile layout, and because of how many options it has.

It's very similar to the windows 7 cell phone app Pictures Hub. The biggest difference is the amount of options Thumba has (over 40 more than Pictures Hub) making it a much more suitable option.

It's a very easy Windows 7 app to use. Simple take a picture and then head over the Thumba app. Once there you can resize, crop, rotate, flip, mirror; you can even add effects like Hue and Saturation, color balance, and color adjustment. My favorite features of the windows app is that you can use effects like Vintage and Lomography to give your phone a unique look.

Adobe Reader

One of the biggest and best features on windows 7 mobile device (and perhaps the best selling) is that it will eventually be equipped with flash. As of right now that is not enable one most windows smartphones so in the meantime we will have to have the next best thing - Adobe Reader.

This is one of the best windows 7 cell phone apps, and probably one of the top 5 windows mobile apps of all time, because it will let you download and open any PDF fill from web pages and emails. This is a revolution of sorts, letting you share information in much more creative and productive manners.

DateSquare

For some this may not be considered a top windows 7 phone application, but for me, as well as others, its one of the most innovative smartphone apps.

DateSquare is a dating app for windows 7 cell phones (will be released later for other smartphones, as well as the iPhone). The app is simple in nature: it will show you all the guys and girls available for a date that are in a location near you (assuming they have the windows app as well). It works best when you're out at the bar or club and want to meet someone in the area.

This is one of the best apps for windows 7 phone because it will:

  • Send messages and ask for a date.
  • Get real time responses
  • Instant chat
  • Call the date.
  • Give directions via the map apps.
  • Check into venues.

YouTube

This, of course, is an obvious choice for a must have app on the windows 7 cell phone. YouTube is a phenomena that as covered every inch of this world.

The YouTube app for windows mobile phones isn't anything special; moreover it's a video player that, after you find the video you want on the browser, will play it in the app. The best feature of this app is that it will play videos for you that are not just from YouTube; by this I mean if you find a video on another site and want to watch it all you have to do is click on it and the app will open and play it.

Shazam

Shazam has been around for a while but it has never looked as nice as it does on windows 7 phones. It's by far the nicest version of the app (far superior of iPhone apps and android apps), making it one of the best windows 7 mobile apps.

It allows you to tag many different songs at a time; the converter works well picking up almost every song on the radio.

The best feature of this windows 7 cell phone application, however, is that, after you discover the song, you can go directly to the Zune marketplace where you can buy the song or listen to a preview. A great feature that, in my opinion, will rival the iTunes store.
