Cool, fun and useful gadgets for college dorm room

Updated on February 5, 2015

College dorm rooms, with their sufficient, economical space, can prove challenging to furnish and decorate.

After fitting in the essentials like the bed the desk, couple of chairs, few kitchen appliances and some storage, looks like something is missing.

Most of the time is all about personal touch that one can easily fix by adding a decorative pillow, a wall paper, a vase with fake flowers or other decorations.

But sometime one may want to add more to it. Here are some items that can be useful and fun.

Flying alarm clock

An alarm clock placed close to the bed is an essential for a college dorm room. But this item is easy missed in the packing process and often skipped all together from the checklist. That's not a tragedy since most 3G phones can be set to give you a ring at a certain time. Though, there are some times when one needs more then a buzz. That's why there is a flying alarm clock on the market. Unless is chased around the room and brought back to the base, the alarm clock won't stop ringing. This ingenious gadget has a detachable rotor that flies high on the room, while the alarm goes on for one hours. No way you won't make it to the 8 am class.

Water purifiers - Ez Freeze

There are several option when it comes to drinking water, from the most expensive one that will require to buy bottled water, to the cheapest one that means using plain top water. Between this two extremes, there are water purifiers and water filtration systems. A $15 pitcher with attached water filter is good enough for a dorm room. But what about on the go? What about icy cold water? There is a solution for this problems too. It is called Ez-Freeze and comes in 24 or 32 oz. This gadget is a basic plastic bottle that has a water filter inserted in a tube that runs through the middle and purifies and cools the water. And it can keep track of how much water you drink.

Portable washing machine

This device is for those students that want to avoid the trip to the laundromat. Though does not dry the clothes, Wonder Washer washes small loads in 15 minutes, while you watch TV or make dinner. Very easy to use, this portable washing machine is perfect for a college dorm room and fits under a counter or in a closet. Weights eight pounds and has a capacity of 7 liters. It can clean 2 shirts and a pant in one cycle. Unfortunately, since is just a bucket that has a motor install on its bottom, it cannot rinse the clothes.

Pillow buddies

Pillow buddies are soft, plush or fuzzy pillows, shaped like animals or cartoon character. Some delinquent pillow buddies are just pillows, over or under-sized, printed or plain. They are used as decoration or for resting or relaxing. Pillow buddies make a great addition to any college dorm room that need a personal touch. Some of the best ones come in the shape of a puppy, almost real, fury or smooth and equipped with batteries. You can get a Labrador, a Chihuahua, a Spaniel or other breeds. They come with adoption papers. a soft bed and a pet carrier. Also, very popular among students are the floor pillows. These huge foam pillows comes in a wide variety of fabrics and colors.

Inflatable sofa

A bed, a desk and a chair is what most students need to furnish their collage dorm room. Sometimes though, if the space is clever controlled, the room can easily fit a sofa too. But furniture like sofas are heavy, expensive and hard to manage on economical spaces. That's why there are inflatable sofas and chairs. Just pump them up, use them when need it, then let the air out and store them in the closet. Plus, bring them back home at vacation time for your room. And ah..did I say they are very affordable?

Laptop safe

No more worries about valuable personal belongings: a laptop steel safe  has been invented. The market offers few kinds of laptop security safes: plain steel boxes, wall mount safe with electronic lock, furniture mount safe. The last one can be placed on a leg of a loft bed, or a desk and can hold a 16" laptop, your jewelry, digital camera or ipod.
Most security locks comply with all the regulation of the college dorm. They are easy to use and install and most of all they are unbreakable. Some of the most expensive models can go over $300 but there are cheaper ones that do the same job.

Portable dish dryer

A rack dish dryer is probably the most common gadget for a small kitchen and it works very well for most people. However, if your aunt wants to give you a back-to-college gift, go for an electric portable dish dryer. It runs at over 100 F and get your dished spotless. This machine is smart. It has a timer and a microprocessor that sets the right time for the drying cycle. It weights about 13 lb (maybe 6 kg) with a capacity of 3.4 litres. And is small enough to fit on a tight space.

Bike rack

This cool gadget is perfect for storing 2 bikes inside your college dorm room. It holds up to 80 lb. It is tall and slender, has adjustable arms and easy to assemble. This bike rack just leans against the wall, keeping your bike away from strangers' temptation.

Door hangers

The classy way to tell people you are busy is to stick a door hang to the nob of the door. Most of them have a different message on each side and they can be purchased in a set of 5.
