Diamond, Gem, Gemstone Tester: Test by Digital Reflectivity, Thermal Conductivity. Mizar, Presidium, iGem

Updated on February 4, 2015

Gemstones, including diamonds, can be detected by the use of digital reflectivity and / or thermal conductivity.

  • Digital reflectivity - A refractometer, which measures digital reflectivity, has the primary use of measuring the angle at which light travels through a gemstone. The light is bent or refracted. This is called the Refractive Index (R.I.). The refractive index is usually different for different gemstones. This provides an important clue for accurate gemstone identification.
Gemological refractometers can also be used to determine whether or not a gemstone is single or double refracting. For a doubly refracting gemstone (based on the difference between 2 readings obtained) the strength of the gemstone's double refraction (birefringence) may be computed. This offers an important gemstone identification aid, as it differs from gem to gem.
Also, a refractometer is one of the few instruments capable of supplying information for opaque gemstones as well as transparent gemstones.
  • Thermal conductivity - this test bases it's effectiveness on the fact that different gemstones conduct heat at different rates. Simply by touching a thermoelectric probe to the surface of any mounted or loose gemstone and the machinery will indicate the relative heat conductivity of the material.

Thermal conductivity testers are unable to detect synthetic moissanite, which are the most common diamond simulants.

Refractometer Gemstone Tester from Amazon

Refractometer Gemstone Tester

This quality refractometer has an all metal construction with built-in light and polarizing filter. This allowins you to perform all needed tests.

it is accompanied by a vinyl soft case with belt loop for convenience while traveling and a hard case for safe storage.

Thermal Conductivity Diamond Testers from Amazon

Thermal Conductivity Diamond Testers

These two diamond testers utilizes the thermal conductivity testing method to verify the authenticity of diamonds.

Both offer:

  • audible signals to indicate if the metal is being touched (which would give a false reading).
  • battery operation, with the DiamondMate-A also operabled with a direct AC current.
  • portability, with the DiamondMate-A being accompanied by a carrying case.

Presidium Gem Tester / Color Stone Estimators

Is it a diamond, ruby, garnet, sapphire, tanzanite, emerald or jadeite?

These Presidium Gem Tester / Color Stone Estimator provide a quick, easy, laboratory proven way to identify diamond and separate the most popular colored gemstones from one another.

They utilise thermal conductivity to detect diamond and simulants and a color gemstone estimating function for rough gemstones, mounted gemstones, and cut gemstones. Each is battery or AC adaptor operated and come with both soft and hard cases.

Digital Reflectivity and Thermal Conductility Gem Tester from Amazon

Digital Reflectivity and Thermal Conductility Gem Tester

The Presidium Duotester provides two tests for diamonds, simulants and colored gemstones by thermal conductivity and digital reflectivity. Even coated gemstones can be tested accurately.

An unknown gemstone can be tested for its thermal conductivity and, if necessary, the results can be confirmed with a quick and simple reflectivity test.

All stones indicated as diamond by the thermal tester should be tested with the reflectivity meter to test for synthetic moissanite. Other synthetics can be differentiated such as: strontium titanate, cubic zirconia, GGG, high zircon, YAG, synthetic Ssapphire and synthetic spinel.

iGem Gold, Diamond and Colored Gemstone Jewelry Testing Kit

This kit consists of:

  • RS Mizar M24 Electronic Gold Tester: precisely determines gold karat values equal to or greater than 9k, 10k, 12k, 14k, 16k, 18k, 20k, 22k and 24k.

  • Presidium Gem Tester / Color Stone Estimator: identifies diamonds, and separates the most popular colored gemstones from one another.

  • Presidium Moissanite Tester PMTII: developed with the sole objective to identify synthetic moissanite (Silicon Carbide).
