Home Theater System Reviews 2014

Updated on December 8, 2013

In home theater system reviews 2014 we are going to discuss what you should be looking for in a home theater system and then we are going to review 4 of 2014's best selling systems. We picked the best options spread out across different price ranges, to help you find something that fits your pocket.

What to look for in a home theater system:

  • A complete home-theater kit usually comes with five speakers, a subwoofer, a receiver, and a Blu-ray / DVD player, with the last 2 parts often combined into a single component. All those components with their cables may clutter up the room, there are also very good systems with less components available.
  • How many Watts the system use is an indication of how loud it can go. 70 Watt systems are generally loud enough.
  • Video and Audio inputs and outputs: Make sure the system you get has some extra video and audio input ports, to connect your video games or satellite dish to the system.

The Sony BDV-E770W is a more compact system, suitable for more cramped rooms like a bedroom. This entertainment system can connect to the internet through your home WiFi network and download movies from Netflix and Youtube.

The glass like front panel of the main receiver unit provides a modern feel. In short, the overall design of the system is very neat and minimalistic. The 'easy setup' program facilitates in the setting up of the system, through a series onscreen menus and options. The 'Automatic Speaker Calibration' is started by plugging in the mic. The adjustments made by the program are highly accurate and can be manually tweaked.

The Blu-ray player plays movies in full HD 1080p, and supports 3D Blu-ray Discs. The system also has an iPod dock. You can synchronize your Ipod or Iphone with the system and use it as a remote.

The most distinguishing feature, of this system is Sony's 'S-Air' wireless audio protocol. This allows for the wireless rear speakers. This is part of the basic package. It does not cost anything extra, as is the case with several other systems on offer.

The video and sound quality, provided by the system is very crisp.

Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX589W 5.1-Channel Theater System

Once again in keeping with Sony's tradition, the design of system is striking. It includes two 'tall boy' front speakers which, rest on adjustable stands. There are left and right surround satellite speakers and a center channel. All the speakers can be wall mounted. This makes the design more versatile.

The setup is made very simple due to the color coded wires. The auto calibration system takes about 5 min to adjust volume levels. The sub-woofer offers a lot of bass. This can be adjusted by using the 'Dynamic Bass” button on the remote. The system comes with Sony's 'S-Air technology' making the rear speakers wireless.

The system has a built-in, single tray five disc DVD Changer. The DVD changer is amazingly quick though a bit noisy. The system plays the usual DVDs and Audio CDs. Also the system has the ability to play MP3 and JPEG files. It also includes an iPod dock. However, it does not include a video input.

This system is intended for those of us, to whom Blu-ray compatibility is not a consideration. For them this system offers a good balance of quality and functionality.

Sony HTS-S370 Surround Sound Home Theater System

This is a component home theater system. So it does not come with a built-in DVD or Blu-ray player. The system is a receiver for any Blu-ray player or HD device you currently have. The 3 HDMI input ports let you connect your devices like Xbox 360, Blu-ray player etc. There is a HDMI output port for your HDTV. Once all the devices are properly connected, you are able to switch between them with ease. The best quality sound is ensured, by having different HDMI output settings for different devices. The auto-calibration further improves the overall sound effect.

The system is also S-Air ready. This means that the rear speakers are compatible to the wireless technology. This is easily achieved by purchasing a transmitter and amplifier.

This is a great money saving product for those who have a Blu-ray player but want a home theater system.

Coby DVD938 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System

This product delivers solid quality sound for the price. Please note that this system is not intended for a high-end consumer. It is more geared towards audiences who want good sound quality and DVD player on a budget.

The system has it's flaws like inability to retain the last source. So every time you power down the system, it switches to the default source settings. The sound produced by the system is great. Achieving the best quality, does require a bit of work and playing around with settings.

In a nutshell it is a low cost high value product and it does not pretend to be anything else. It is not marketed to a seasoned buyer, with a developed taste for home theater systems. However it can be an ideal buy for students living on a budget.

I hope one of the systems reviewed in home theater system reviews 2014 was to your liking. Also check out best universal remote 2014 and best Blu-ray players 2014.
