How to Tag People in a Facebook Status Update

Let's say you've just come home from the movie theater and you had a great time! The movie was great, and so was the company! You decide to update your Facebook status to say what a great time you had. But, you'd really like to not only mention the person who saw the movie with you, but to make sure he (and everyone else!) sees that you were there together.

You can do this by including a link to his profile in your status update.

Tagging Friends in Facebook Statuses

When updating your status in Facebook, you may want to notify your friends, or even mention one of them in your status. This process is called "tagging", and it not only publishes your friend's name in the status, but it also provides a link to their profile directly from your status. People who read your status can click on their name and go directly to your tagged friend's profile.

When you tag someone in a status, they are sent a notification. Also, your status update will show up on your tagged friend's timeline in their profile. You can tag more than one friend at a time and, if you do, the same will apply to all tagged friends.

Tagging Using Facebook Web Site

Using the Facebook web site, you can tag people in a status by typing the "@" symbol into your status. After the "@" symbol, start typing the first name of the friend you want to tag with no space between the "@" and the first name. As you type, a list if your Facebook friends will appear on the screen (enable pop-ups on the site or the list won't appear). Click on the one you want to tag and their name will be placed into the status. Additionally, their name will be a link to their profile.

Once you have tagged a friend in your status, you can shorten the tag by removing their last name. Using the backspace key, remove the last name and the first name will remain as a link. So, if your tag is "John Smith", you can use the backspace key to remove "Smith" and "John" will remain as a link to John's profile.

Facebook Status Tagging in Mobile Apps

You can tag friends when updating your Facebook status using a mobile device, also! For Android Facebook App users, the process is the same as on the Facebook web site: use the "@" symbol followed by the friend's name.

On the Facebook iPhone and iPad app, the process is a bit different. Instead of tagging someone in the middle of the status, you can only tag them at the end of the status. After the status, the word "with" will show up, followed by the friends' names. They will still be notified, but the tag will only be displayed at the end of the status.

To tag someone in a status on the Facebook iPhone and iPad app, follow these steps:

  1. After logging into Facebook on the app, tap the "Status" button to enter a status.
  2. Enter the text of the status, such as "I love this new movie!"
  3. Tap the icon of a person with a plus sign at the bottom left of the Status box. This will bring up a list of your Facebook friends.
  4. Tap each friend in the list that you wish to tag in your status. As you tap them, their names will appear at the top of the list and a check mark will appear to the right of each of their names.
  5. After selecting all of the friends you wish to tag, click the "Done" button to return to the status section. At the end of your status, you will now see the word "with" followed by your friends' names. Their names are active links to their profiles.
  6. Click the "Post" button to post your status update with the tags.

Can I Tag Other Facebook Sites?

As with friends, you can also tag other Facebook pages that you have "liked", or groups that you belong to. The process is the same, and your status will contain a link to the page for the group or site that you tagged. This is especially fun when you want to alert your Facebook friends to particular site, such as a television show you like or a movie you want to see. Or, you can alert people about groups to join or other fun activities. Tagging provides an outlet for you to promote other pages. If it has a page on Facebook, you can tag it!

Who Can See Facebook Tags?

When you post a status without a tag, you can determine who can see that status. There is a drop-down menu to set the status audience for each post.

However, when you tag someone in a status, the status may be visible to friends of the person tagged, regardless of whether those people are also your friends. If your status audience is set to Friends or Public, the tagged person's friends will be able to see it. If you don't want their friends to see it, select "Custom" in the audience drop-down menu and then uncheck the box for "Friends of those tagged".

Any user may also turn on the Timeline Review setting in their account so that they have to review and approve any post that goes onto their timeline. With this option, your tagged friend could deny your status from appearing on their timeline, or they can exclude some people from seeing that status.

Hi GoodLady! Thanks for reading and commenting. I had to do a bit of research for this hub also, having not used all the tagging options in the past. I'm glad it is helpful!

Invaluable. I'm just getting the hand of social networking and so your in detail information is most helpful. I'm pinning this so that I can go and have a quiet study (being such a slow learner), thank so much.

I confess I don't really like for people to tag me in photos! I don't use these features, but I am glad to know how they work - great hub!

      Great info , thanks.

One of my FB pet peeves that I still can't get used to is people tagging photos. I stll find myself searching the photo for the face of the person tagged but it's not going to be there. In my mind "tagging" a photo means bringing attention to that person.
