Hubbers' Opinions: What Parts Of Facebook Frustrate You?

Updated on July 23, 2012

Questions for HubPages

The Q&A Section of HubPages

Recently, I asked a question in the Q&A section of HubPages. My question to my fellow Hubbers was, "What parts of Facebook frustrate you?" I found the answers interesting and want to share with readers who may not have seen the page previously.

Check out the original page:

What parts of Facebook frustrate you?

Why Ask This Question?

My question originated after a fellow Hubber told me that she was frustrated by parts of Facebook. She explained that she had written "rants" (her word) within a few groups within the popular social media network.

Did I mention that she wrote her comments within a group on Facebook? Let me head over the dictionary to see the definition of Irony...

The question got me wondering whether other Hubbers are also frustrated by Facebook. If so, I was interested in finding out what parts of the social network in particular are frustrating amongst the writing community.

I loved how quickly Hubbers started to view and answer the question. I recognized by the speedy response that there are gripes about Facebook. Thank-you to all who commented!

Get out the magnifying glass because it's time to look over the answers in more depth.

The Timeline

Hubber Sincerely T wrote, "One of the reasons I'm no longer on Facebook is because of Timeline. I absolutely do not like that format."

If you head to the original Q&A page, you will see I selected this answer as the "Best"; HubPages encourages us when we close the Questions to also pick a "Best" one. The reason I chose this answer over the others is for the sheer popularity of this response.

For months now, I have seen comments amongst my Facebook Friends about the Timeline and the majority of comments are not positive. Specific complaints about the Timeline feature amongst my 252 Friends have included:

  • Dislike of the two-sided profile feed.
  • Inability to go back to the old FB design.
  • Plug-ins for other social media networks do not work the same. FB seems to compile a group of updates from the joined network and then post them onto the Timeline all at once.
  • Friends said the old design worked just fine and didn't understand why a new one was rolled out.
  • Crashes as the Timeline loads and slow load speed.

Given the number of complaints about the Timeline that I have heard, I do think it was necessary to select this one as the "Best" answer!

Hubber iefox5 also wrote that he is frustrated with the Timeline:

"I'm not used to the new facebook timeline design and miss previous one :("

Do You...

Do You Play Facebook Games?

Drama Queens and Kings

Hubber DS Duby brought up the topic of Drama Queens & Kings on the social media network. He wrote that this is one of the points that frustrate him at Facebook. I believe he may be referring to the statuses that cry out for attention, such as:

  • "I had an awful day today! Want to know why?"
  • "Waaaa life sucks :( "
  • And more! (Here I turn away from Drama Queens & Kings as they seem to like the attention a little too much)

DS Duby also wrote that he is frustrated by all of the invitations he receives to play FB games, which he does not care to play. To put it more directly, he wrote, "I hate facebook games".

There are several games to play on the social media network and often its users are prompted to send invitations to connections to play as well. A lot of these notifications can be frustrating for users who do not participate in the games.

A Funny Addition

I also received a funny comment from Hubber JBrummett. JBrummett wrote:

"I'm having trouble with the signing up part. I still haven't done that =P"

Not everyone on HubPages is on Facebook. Some social media networks appeal more than others to Hubbers. Given the limited amount of time in the day (I still want to introduce the 25 hour day!), Hubbers must bide their time between their favourite social media networks.

Are you on Facebook? What are other parts of Facebook that frustrate you? I would love to hear your comments!

@nanderson, yes but I suppose nothing every stays the same... including Facebook!

Yeah I agree with some other commenters, the constant changes are annoying. They should leave well enough alone.

@Keith, yes I think the same about those FB statuses. Those problems seem so minor in comparison to homelessness and other major issues... Glad you have all in perspective. Thanks for taking time to read!

Christy, you have basically given all the reasons why I can't stand facebook. There are so many statuses showing up on my feed about their issues. (i.e. "Waaaaaaaaaaaah my boyfriend broke up with me! I'm gonna die D:") My reaction to that: First world problems...

@Aubrey, thanks for the input. You are one of the few who really likes the changes - or that is not afraid to tell me about it LOL. You're right about the name mentions - I think I do that too sometimes! Have a great day and enjoy your Facebook sessions too :)

@Cogerson, Thank-you. It was fun to survey the HP community and I do like getting comments... including yours! Glad your experience with FB has been a positive one. Have a great day!

I actually like Timeline a lot for some reason. It's different but I love how it chronicles the life of the user. It has all my pertinent details there for people to read. I think it's interesting. What's funny is being tagged in a comment on a post you already commented on. Once you comment on something, you follow it and will receive updates. Why is there a need to tag me? I'm already following the post! lol... that's funny. I don't like the "like" button. It's just a lazy thing to do really. I prefer real comments. Like this one! :) Awesome read Christy. See ya around.

I must be in the minority.....I love Facebook and do not have any real issues with it.....granted I have ignored the entire Timeline part all together....and heard my sister-in-law had lots of issues with her timeline.

I enjoyed reading all the comments you collected....kudos for coming up with an interesting hub subject.....keep up the good work...voted up and awesome.

@Deb, Yes I agree that the statuses can be pretty "out there' sometimes. Good point. I wonder if they realize that their statuses are not really private or if they are proud of the cursing language, like it makes them cool? Nope!

@Teaches, LOL I know what you mean about lots of notifications! If someone "likes" something do we always need to know? Thanks for the comment and adding in that detail!

@Melis, Glad to hear you have fine-tuned your FB profile. I also blocked certain features when some friends updated their statuses a few times a day. Hmm! Thanks for the comment here.

@dwachira, Slow load time is something I have heard people complain about. Would be nice if we had to option to go back to the old format. Thanks for the read, support, and votes too!

@moonlake, It can be overwhelming some days. Thanks for the feedback!

      @carter, Thank-you for the compliments. I also love Twitter - it's fast-paced and fun!

@Josh, nice that you laughed along the way - poor FB is getting laughed at :)

@Jackie, good point that we spend more time weeding through notifications than interacting LOL!

@Tammy, thank-goodness for the block button :) Thanks for taking time to stop by to comment.

@MsLizzy, the load time for the Timeline can be looong some days yet I find not so much other days... Oh dear I hope FB makes some adjustments soon! Thanks for sharing your thoughts in a great comment here.

@Janine, How nice that you stopped back again to comment :) Smiles!

@Kelley, no you don't annoy us on FB and we love to read your updates :) Take care hon

@Barbergirl, what a thoughtful comment. You raise an additional point about the hating comments - I have seen this too and don't quite understand it... glad I'm not alone there! I appreciate that you added that detail. Thanks for the visit!

I missed this question. I hate Timeline, too. Fortunately, I haven't been switched over yet, but realize it's coming soon. What I really hate are the profane status updates. And I'm not just talking about the teenagers and young adults. I see a lot of middle-age people cussing like sailors in their status updates. I'm no saint and certainly have dropped my fair share of f-bombs, but would never do so in such a public forum.

I think there should be more block options on FB. I do love to hear how people are doing, love the positive encouragement and news, but hate having to scroll through other negativity and meaningless posts. Overall, it is a good communication tool.

    • Melis Ann profile image

Melis Ann 5 years ago from Mom On A Health Hunt

I too have gotten fed up with constant cries for attention and negativity that many post. My best friend is the block feature. I'm happy to block those that aren't adding value to my life. It becomes much more enjoyable to just see the best of the best. I also love that you can put controls on what other people post - for example you can create settings to have to approve pictures, tags and mentions that others post. I've also converted to wanting to see news/info on my news feed by subscribing to differerent FB pages. So far, anything that has really annoyed me on FB I have found a way around it.

How did i miss this question, i must have been so glued to may stats not to see it. I must say Facebook Timeline is my number one dislike, i don't like the entire crafting of it plus it makes the page very slow as it loads old stuff from previous years that are not necessary. Voted up, interesting and more.

I'm hardly on facebook maybe once a week. Hate it when people put my picture on there without asking me. Hate the way the thing rolls and I just can't keep up with it. Voted Up.

Awesome hub! I don't like the timeline either and I can see how you got fast responses! It was a clever idea for a hub and a question. Thanks for sharing; I enjoyed it and also had some good laughs!

This is really interesting. I like Facebook because I get to stay in touch with those who are far away. It sometimes gets uncomfortable when friends get into battles on each other's profiles. I try to ignore that as well as some of the oversharing of personal information. I do not play the games and I have tried to block all those invites but it seems like new games are created. All the hassles and as_______ are easily avoided with the block button so its manageable. Cute idea.

I am on FB, and I do HATE the new "Timeline" format.

I also play a couple of the games, and find them frustrating in the extreme. They are time-sucks as it is, and seem designed to waste even more time--such as having to look through your feed for peoples' requests for items/parts, and send them one at a time, and wait for the page to go back and re-load again time and again to get it all done. There is no reason why they shouldn't have a one-page, accept/send all at once format.

      Yeah...I could go on.....and on....

      Voted up & interesting.

Hey Christy - I don't have many complaints about FB...I guess I don't have too many friends that do annoying things!

I do not play FB games though - I don't find them very much fun and I just keep thinking about all the other things I could be doing! Great hub though and I will try to make sure I don't do stuff to annoy my friends!

    • ChristyWrites profile image

@Janine, That's a great suggestion! I would love if we had the option as to what format we want to use at FB. Glad we are connected both there and here, nonetheless :) Thanks for the comments my friend.

@Deborah, yes it can be hard to keep up with the changes! Plus, sometimes we don't even know they are coming! Thanks for stopping by to read and share too.

@Lucky Cats, Great comment! Your views really add to the hub. I also tried to let me friends know about my not participating in the FB games. Yet I still get notifications... there just isn't time to play them I find! Thanks for the comment, votes, and share too!

@Jeff, Facebook is free and you're right that free doesn't mean perfect :)

@Carol, Take your time with Facebook and you will learn more about it as you get hands-on there. I'm glad you're here on HP and going to try your hand at the social media world too!

@DS Duby, I don't play the FB games either so I'll join you in that club. I thought it was a great point you made that it frustrates you. Yes, here is another hub to add to your growing list of credits as you make your way to being famous worldwide :)

@CloudExplorer, Janine brings up a similar point in her comment. While some people like the Timeline, others do not. I wish we had the option to keep the old layout or switch to the new. Your comments make sense. Thanks for taking time to stop by today!

@Bill, I'm going to have to send FB a note to say that you prefer to be notified of changes BEFORE they happen :) Thanks buddy for the reads!

Facebook is a love hate relationship with me... I love how I can connect with people. Sure, I might not keep in touch with them otherwise if it wasn't for facebook. After all, our lives may have taken completely different routes. Mostly what I like about it is my ability to connect with other writers. Those friends I have made seem to make Facebook a much more enjoyable, and active place for me.

However, I also dislike the favoritism that can be played. I have seen it with people I know and people who I really don't know. It bugs me how people have turned it into a place to spew their hatred - their hatred for certain people, their politics, their religious rants. I don't mind if you post it - just hate it when it turns into something more than it should be.

I guess I could go on and on. But, the benefits I recieve from having a facebook account will always far outweigh the negatives. Especially since if people really get on my nerves, you can just block them! :)

Awesome hub, Christy. I have lost count how many of my friends on Facebook have complained about the timeline and can tell you I myself don't mind it, but if so many people do than maybe just maybe the folks at Facebook should listen to the masses and do something about it. Possibly have 2 options, one for the timeline and one for the original profile page and it can be up to the user which one they want. That said this was very informative and a excellent read. Voted and shared too.

I don't know if this happens to others but, when I'm typing in the message box, the type keeps jumping around so that I can't see the sentence or individual words I'm typing. Very frustrating. Unlike some I've spoken with; I like the Timeline format. I do NOT like all the games...I've tried to let my FB friends know that I don't participate in those...I DO like the 'like' option. In some cases, when I want to participate or view a link, I am expected to "share my information and that of my facebook friends," or something to this, I DON'T because it isn't my place to spread others' information all over the net....I know this is rather idealistic but, still...I do not wish to include others who have not given permission to do so. Very interesting and thought provoking hub, Christy! Up Interesting Useful

Great hub Christy! There are lots of little things that are frustrating about Facebook and it is interesting to hear what annoys others about the site. The one thing that seems to be overlooked consistently is that Facebook is free, and you get what you pay for.

Hi Christy: This is really of interest to me. I have had a facebook account but never really used it. Thought it might be good as I am now writing on HubPages. This hub was very interesting because it is in union with an actual Q&A question of your own, and the fact that you have pulled into it many of the actual answers to this question you've asked there.

Nice job here on this hub by the way, I also hate facebook games like MR. DS Duby, I do however love the timeline there, because I have full customization of it all, and it displays all of my posts in some cool looking ways.

I think its all a matter of personal preference, but Facebook did shoot themselves in the digital foot sort of speak by not allowing people to change it back.

I also think they forced everyone to go along with the changes, without much thought as to people providing any feedback as to if they liked it or not. That was quite selfish on their part, but that's how big business works, and always has, you know.

Voted up and getting shared Christy.

Shoot, I always miss the good stuff. What frustrates me about Facebook....the constant changes! I just get comfortable with something and it changes and then I spend weeks getting used to that. Don't they realize who I am?????

      Great hub Christy!
