In 2012, next phase of the internet revolution begins! Register .web, .site, .bank, .shop, .xxx, .one domain names

Updated on June 14, 2011

Yes, that is true, around mid of 2012 ICANN, a non profitable organization who manages and control Internet domain names, is planning to introduce a number of new top level domain names to the Internet world. In simple, top level domains (TLD) are the suffix part of an Internet address after the dot (“.”) – like .com, .org, .net. Now ICANN is planning for few more new domain extensions such as ".web,.site,.bank,.shop,.xxx,.one" etc. Many domain registrars have already started preregistration for the new TLDs. These new top level domains are officially called “new generic top level domains” (new gTLDs).

ICANN

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is a non profit public-benefit corporation, formed in September 1998 with members from all over the world. I CANN controls and manages top-level domains, Internet Protocols address spaces, assignment of IP address spaces to Internet registrars. ICANN doesn’t control the Internet content.

Why is it important?

It is very important to everyone, from a multi national company who want to secure their brand name to an individual who would like to get his favorite domain name that is not currently available with existing TLDs (.com, .net, .org etc) The Companies, whether it is a small or a big, want to ensure that their brand names are not taken by someone else. Imagine if someone has registered google.web or facebook.web and enjoying all the brand values, good will and traffic these companies have been created over many years!! This is just an example, even though there are copy right and trade mark laws, this can happen to any company who uses more generic name as those laws could be cleverly managed by a person who know this business well.

The domain re-sellers are also eagerly looking forward for this event. Domain resellers usually register many domain names at a time. The domain name chosen by these re-sellers would be more generic, attractive and eye catching names so that they can resell this to someone for a big price. This process is also called “Domain Flipping”. Many MNCs and mid level companies are ready to pay millions for such names. Sedo.com is well known in this business, we can see many such deals on their website

Domain name preregistration

Eventhough some domain registrars have already been started new domain preregistration process, we should know some important points about this. Even if you preregister your desired domain name, this doesn’t guarantee that you will get that domain name when the real domain registration process starts. The reason being, there is really no preregistration process! Then what’s happening here is, the registrars keep tracking the exact time and date for the new registration process - this could be an automated process. As soon as the real registration starts, this automated process will start registering all the domain names preregistered with them. The same way, many other registrars would also be trying at the same time and there is a chance that someone else also trying for your domain name. Your registrar may need to compete with the other registrar for your domain name and who finish the registration first would secure the domain name.

When to expect?

The new domain name extension (TLD) registration is expected to start on October 2012. The uniteddomains.com is offering preregistration service, and I have secured some of my favorite domain names.
