Laptops: Sony FW Series Laptops Feature an Extra-Wide 16.4 inch Monitor

Updated on March 17, 2011

Sony is well known for their high-end laptop computers. Each Vaio series is sprinkled with unique features that are hard to resist. If you automatically think that the prices are out of your league – check again.

Battery life is one of the most important features for many people. Whether using the laptop for spreadsheets or for watching movies an electrical outlet is not always available. Commonly 3- 4 hours is normal for most standard laptop batteries but the batter in the FW series is rated for 6 hours.

The monitor on the Sony Vaio FW series is amazing. It is extra-wide – 16.4” with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Why is this special? This allows movies to show full screen without black bars on the sides. This Widescreen monitor also allows you to view two pages of data side by side.

The A/V Mode is perfect for watching movies or viewing your digital photos. There is no need to boot up the laptop – just push one button and you are ready to be entertained. You are in control of the volume, play, pause, rewind, stop and eject.

Communication is so easy with the Sony Vaio FW series. An integrated motion eye webcam and microphone is super handy for video conferencing with friends and family. Still photos can also be snapped.

A few other features that may catch your attention is the availability of up to a 500GB hard drive or up to 128GB SSD, up to an amazing 8GB of DDR2 SDRAM, multiple expansion slots for Memory Stick Duo, SD cards and an Express Card. Communication is easy via fast Ethernet, integrated modem, Wireless LAN, WiFi and Bluetooth. Back to movie watching – the Sony FW series offers either an ATI Mobility Radeon or Mobile Intel Graphics Accelerator 4500MHD, Mobile Intel Express Chipset, HDMI and VGA out and up to 512MB dedicated video RAM.

Weight wise the Vaio FW series is a bit hefty. With the standard battery installed you can expect it to weigh up to 7 pounds. Price wise, you may be impressed that some configurations can be purchased for just over $1000.
