How to Skype on the HTC Evo 4G with Video Chat

Updated on August 5, 2011

Make Video Calls on the HTC Evo 4G

Many folks, including myself, have recently bought the HTC Evo 4G. This phone is being heavily promoted by Sprint as the First 4G phone. Besides the added speed of 4G the connection also allows Evo users to use the internet while on calls, something that AT&T has pointed out as a limitation of other networks for a long time. Not only can you use the internet while on the phone, but you can also run multiple apps while on the phone.

Another great thing about the HTC Evo 4G phone  is its Video capability. With The Evo you can watch YouTube HQ videos on its 4.3 inch screen or you can record your own videos in 720p with its 8mp camera. In addition to the beautiful high resolution camera that is on it's back, the evo has a second front facing camera for making Video calls.

Video chat is nothing new. What is special about the Evo is that it's the first cell phone that makes mobile video chat possible in the US. No more computer and webcam required.

Update: Skype Mobile Now Available

The long awaited update that android users have been waiting for has come. Skype has released a new Mobile app for the android which includes Video chat. The new Skype Mobile with Video Chat is now available for download through the Andriod Market Place.

Download it today!

What about Skype?

Those of you who are Skype and Android users may be aware of the rocky relationship that these two have seemed to have had. Shortly after I got my Evo 4G I was upset to find out that Skype made their Android App exclusively available for Verizon as part of their new partnership with Verizon and you were unable to download skype mobile for any phones that were not on the Verizon Wireless Network.

There was No Skype Mobile Download for Evo 4G

In the past If you tried to download Skype for your Evo through the Google MarketPlace you would not find any Skype App to download for your Evo 4G. Likewise, if you to get the Skype Mobile for Andriod from Skype's website you would find that there was no skype download for the Evo 4G.

Skype only offered Skype Mobile for Andriod to Verizon Wireless SmartPhones.

Let the Skyping Resume!

Skype has released an updated Mobile App for android which includes Video Calling. This app is available through the Goolge MarketPlace as well as downloadable from Skypes website. Best of all the app is free to all Android users regardless of Carrier!

HTC 4G owners can now welcome skype back into their world.

Make Skype Video Calls on your Evo with Fring

When the Evo 4G first came out one way you were able to use Skype on your Evo was through an application call Fring. Skype later severed this connection shorlty after the release of the IPhone4, which Fring also allowed users to make skype video calls through.

Fring is a Multi-Client IM, Phone and now Video Phone application. And by Multi-Client, I mean pretty much all of the major Instant Messaging Services.

Multi Video Chat

While you can no longer make Skype calls through Fring, this has not stopped Fring from being on the forefront of Mobile Video chat. Fring has released a Group Video Chat application that will let you chat with up to 4 friends at one time. Group Video Chat is something Google has recently been toying with as part of Google +, but that feature is not yet part of the Google + Mobile App.

Qik

If you get an Evo, it comes with a video program called Qik already installed on it. The Qik app lets you record and upload video to YouTube, Facebook or Twitter, as well as make video calls. This is great if your friend or family member also has an Evo since the app is already on their phone. However, if you want to call anyone else they will need to install the app on their cell phone and sign up for a Qik account. Which is fine if you are not already using video chat software and have a smartphone.
