Slow Computer? How to Change from Ubuntu to Xubuntu Operating System

If you have installed Ubuntu on your computer neglecting its relatively high system requirements, you may find that your computer is either pretty slow or not working properly.

Fortunately for you, there is an easy solution to this problem, and you don't have to give up on Ubuntu, this great piece of free, community-powered operating system, either.

What you need is a different version of Ububtu, called Xubuntu. Xubuntu is basically a light-weight, Xfce desktop Ubuntu Linux, designed to run on slow systems. This doesn't mean it's an older version of Ubuntu. It has its six-month updates and releases just like its big brother. The difference is, Xubuntu was designed for people who prefer practicality over fancy looks.

Xubuntu offers all the applications you'll ever need, web browsing, email applications and word processing, to web server software and programming tools.

You can download, use and share Xubuntu with family, friends, school mates or business partners free of charge and without any licensing fees. Perfect for both laptops and desktops with a new desktop and server release issued every six months to keep you up to date with the latest and greatest.

Xubuntu is designed with security in mind. You need very little to no malware protection. You don't have to run weekly virus and spyware scans, but the best thing is that you can be free of worry in this regard.

If you are considering Ubuntu Linux for the first time and are wondering if you are computer-savvy enough to try something other than Windows or Mac, I can assure you you are. Ubuntu and Xubuntu are safer and much less bothersome than Windows in every respect. And they are just as friendly. 

192 MB RAM to run the Live CD or to install, or 64 MB RAM to use the Alternate Install CD.
128+ MB RAM to run Xubuntu with 256 MB RAM recommended.
2.0 GB of free hard disc space to install Xubuntu.

If you have already installed Ubuntu and your computer is considerably slower than you'd prefer, it is easy to switch from Ubuntu to Xubuntu, which is basically a light-weight Xfce version of Ubuntu, but with the same functionality.

I might add, it is just as easy to migrate from Kubuntu (KDE desktop version of Ubuntu) or Edubuntu (Ubuntu for educational purposes) to Xubuntu. It is basically the same process. It's done by removing all Gnome and KDE packages by following the methods below. Note, there is no data loss involved in the process, so you don't have to make backups. Only if you insist.

For Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) paste the appropriate command into the terminal, press enter and wait. Note, for older versions don't use these codes! Email me with the details and I'll give you the appropriate code.

You'll be prompted to answer yes or no questions throughout the process regarding disc space usage. Nothing complicated. I put the codes at the very end of the hub, because they are very long. Just read on through the article and you'll find the appropriate code in the end.

When you're done do a re-boot and you'll be presented with the new Xubuntu login screen. Log in using your usual nickname and password.

The desktop is very similar to what you are used to, a few things are in different places, but they are easy to locate.

Everything is working, but some of your installed applications have been removed. Open Office, K3B, Krusader, Kpdf are a few that may be missing. Go to Applications menu -> System -> Add/remove to open the application manager and simply reinstall what you need the usual way.

You won't be able to access root using 'nautilus' any more. The new command is 'thuner,' other than that, everything is the same.

You might want to download / install the available updates that you'll find in the upper right corner. Also, you might want to reconfigure the desktop to fit your needs and taste by right clicking and choosing Desktop Settings.
