The Best Portable Hard Drive For Backing Up Files on Your Mac

Updated on July 17, 2012

Choosing a External Hard Drive For Mac Computers

Backing up files from your computer is extremely important if you want to protect yourself from losing all the data on your computer. Sometimes your computer can completely crash without warning and you will lose access to all of your files forever. This has happened to me once when I dropped my computer, and it recently happened to my friend when his computer crashed from a computer virus that was slowly slowing his computer down. I learned a lesson from it, and I could have prevented the loss of all my files if I had backed up all my mac files onto an external hard drive.

Hopefully this inspires you to protect yourself as well, but just incase you didn't know - there are portable hard drives that are designed for PC computers and portable hard drives that are designed for Mac computers. This article will elaborate on the best kind of external hard drives you can get for a mac computer, they are completely compatible with mac computers and they make backing up files extremely easy to do.

Recommended External Hard Drives For Mac

The Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive

The Iomega eGo portable hard drive has gotten outstanding reviews, it has been a top competitor for external hard drives on the market for quite some time. The eGo makes transferring and backing up files extremely easy, its very reliable and it has a very sleek look that many external hard drives don't offer. Many Iomega external hard drives are designed to hold a very large amount of files. The iOmega eGo can hold 1 TB of data or much more depending on what model you choose.

SeaGate GoFlex Ultra-portable Hard Drive

The SeaGate GoFlex Ultra Portable External hard drive for mac is a very promising external hard drive for mac that averages around 4 out of 5 stars when it comes to customer satisfaction. If your looking for an external hard drive that is mac formatted and has the ability to save a monstrous amount of information, the SeaGate GoFlex is for you. It can save up to 1.5 TB of data, which allows you to back up a ridiculous amount of information. Additionally, its stylish, reliable and very portable. One of the best things about this hard drive is that its still fairly small, but it can hold more data than most external hard drives.

Western Digital My Passport For Mac

The Passport by Western Digital is a perfect external hard drive for any mac user that wants a speedy and very portable external hard drive, but that can still hold a decent amount of data. The Western Digital Passport is affordable and can carry 1 TB of data, there are also some models that can carry less than 1 TB if your looking to save money on your external hard drive. The Passport external hard drive for mac got great reviews and many users were enthusiastic about how easy it is to use and how fast device worked when backing up files.

I personally own this external hard drive and I have no complaints. I have never had any problems saving my information from my computer, and I still am only using half of the available space on my 1 TB Passport.

Great hub, I'm always interested in this kind of stuff. Right now I use a 2 TB Western Digital myBook which I access wirelessly over my home's network. I have ran out of space on my MacBook Pro twice and use it to hold extra files that I don't always need, but eventually I will invest in a portable hard drive so I will save this hub. Also, did I say that I enjoyed this hub? :)
